Hypothetical: Hue Jackson

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So let's say for a moment that Mike Shula does move on next season to a head coaching opportunity or, for whatever reason, just isn't here anymore.

One of my favorite choices for a coordinator - in any phase of the game - is someone who's been good enough to get a head coaching job or consideration but has either failed at it (like Dick LeBeau) or just doesn't seem interested (a la Jim Johnson).

A coach of that sort could be available next year.

After his performance with the Browns, I think it's pretty safe to say that Hue Jackson is not getting another head coaching opportunity anytime soon, if ever. Even so, he's an accomplished OC with a consistent record of success. Throw in too that his background is in the same sort of Coryell type systems that the Panthers have typically run under Ron Rivera.

So he'd be a slam dunk choice, right?

Wellll...

If you've watched him on Hard Knocks, you know that Jackson's personality is... interesting. At times, he seems to enjoy annoying people, especially serious, stoic types like Mike Zimmer. Rivera's not as hard nosed as Zimmer (few are) but still, he and Jackson could very easily be an oil and water type mix.

There is also the fact that Rivera interviewed Jackson here before, and chose Mike Shula over him. It's quite possible that Jackson rubbed Rivera the wrong way in the interview process. That's speculation, of course, but believable speculation nonetheless.

Then there are the rumors. It's been whispered that Jackson is the sort who'll stab a colleague in the back to get ahead. Is there any truth to this? Frankly, I have no idea, but it's out there. Of course, given the current situation, there may not be much to gain even if it is true since Jackson's not likely to get another head coaching offer while the stink of the Cleveland fiasco still lingers.

Lastly, not so much a negative as a question: How would a personality like Jackson mesh with Cam Newton? Mike Shula tends to be measured and controlled, even when he's angry. Jackson is more the type to blister the walls. How well would that work with a player of Newton's caliber and temperament?

So what say you?

If there is an opening for the offensive coordinator position next year, would you want Hue Jackson to be the guy who fills it?

Honestly I haven't felt like the play calling has been bad the last few weeks.  I'm a bit frustrated that Stewart is still getting so many carries (I think CAP should get his), but I think that is more Rivera's doing than Shula.

Something about Hue Jackson rubs me the wrong way though.  I know he has a decent body of work as a coordinator, but like you said, I don't know if he would mesh.  We would probably be more likely to promote someone within anyways.

Now with that said, I can't imagine working with Bill Belichick on a daily basis is exactly a load of laughs, but he's successful.

Would you be willing to work closely with someone you didn't like if it meant success and glory?

Sadly, possible.

There are numerous indications that Dorsey is more "buddy" to Cam than actual coach. I have a hard time believing he'd be successful in a more authoritative role like coordinator.

Rivera might believe it, though.

Regardless, in this thread I'm looking less at what I believe will actually happen and more at whether or not you think Hue could work here as OC.

Hue Jackson as an OC for a Cam Newton team?

Wew. We’d be going to the superbowl guaranteed next year.

Ignore the personality. Just focus on the magic he makes. He’d be what Shanahan was to Ryan for Cam Newton x1000000

So you'd jump on that bandwagon with both feet.

I have a feeling you're not alone.

I don't agree with you on much, but this right here is the truth.  I've had enough of the "cohesive" attitude bull poo.  It's still after these years gotten us ZERO Super Bowl rings, and zero back to back winning seasons.  Sometimes a change could help tremendously, and Jackson would be interesting.  And if it doesn't work out, it's not like Shula wouldn't be there for us to hire again.

How old are you?

I've always been under the impression that Sac is around college age.

To me though, it's less about age than work experience.

If you've been out in the work world for a while, chances are you've had to work with somebody you don't like.

It can really, really suck, which is why I don't think this is as easy a question as it might seem.

In all respects, I just want a coordinator who can maximize the skillset Cam Newton possesses, and it’s quite possible Hue Jackson is the guy for it.

While Shula has actually been decent as of late in play design, he does lack in the feel and flow of the game, much like Sarkisian has struggled with early on for the Falcons this year.

Hue Jackson is arguably one of the top minds when it comes to offensive scheme and playcalling. I would be ecstatic if he worked with a Newton offense.

Personality wise, it’s always good to have someone who meshes well with everyone for good working relationships, especially considering the Chip Kelly experiment in Philly. But even so, a role as an OC should be strong in the intellect and creativity department more-so than playing buddy buddy in my opinion.

Scot, do you think Jackson could maximize McCaffrey's potential?  I think Shula has ruined him to an extent so far.

Understood.

You remember that other guy we had who was good at his job but had a prickly personality though, right?

If we're talking strictly about schematic questions regarding Jackson, yeah I think he'd be successful.

The man knows offense. I doubt anyone would deny that.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
