A good OC knows his personnel and how to put them in a position to succeed.

I think you could give Sean Payton six receivers fresh out of college and he could still design an effective attack.  Ditto Josh McDaniels.

What I will emphatically say till the end of days--The year the refs sucked the Harbaughs off to the SB was our year.  Not 2015 but that damn season.  Everything clicked, our defense was the best it was ever with Cam and we couldn't execute in the red zone.  Just like in the SB, just like in 2016, just like this entire past year.

The last time this team had a actual offense with weapons was 2012. Both Hurney and DG failed at giving Cam a #1 WR and Cam has never had two good WRs in a year. I understand a great OC can overcome lesser talent but besides Greg Olsen Cam hasn't had anyone to throw to since Smith left.

Yeah and as I said to panthers55 what about 2015?

If Shula offense didn't exceed with KB and Smith and doing better without a number 1, Idk what gives anybody the idea it will perform with a number 1 receiver. Is the excuse those guys weren't "true" number 1s? Watching the play calling and design of the Saints offense, we need more than just a number 1. We've been fooled long enough.

Let's be real: Ron Rivera was never going to hire Hue Jackson. Their respective personalities make oil and water look compatible (I can only imagine how that interview went). And even if he had, how long was that gonna last?  At the time, Jackson was still looking (hard) at being a head coach again.  He got his wish, and well...yeesh.

But what about Shurmur?

Well, part of the reason Shurmur got a look in the first place was that he and Rivera were former colleagues.  They were on the Eagles staff together for five years (1999-2003).  And again, Shurmur had already proven himself successful enough as an OC (with the Rams) to get a head coaching job.  That job being in Cleveland, it was by nature temporary, but after his work in Minnesota he's getting looked at again.

What could have been...

See how often Saints used drags over the middle?

This beats man and zone and opens up the middle of the field.

Which is what they keep killing us on.

Panthers rarely do that.

They pass deep on play action like San Fran.

Shula should take notes.

As many times as we've played the Saints, if he hasn't learned anything by now, well...

I want to know who is evaluating talent on the offensive side when it comes to bringing players in. Thats who needs to go.

I just got finished looking at Hurney Free Agent numbers.  During his first tenure we selected 38 free agents.  Of those 38 Free Agents a whopping 13 actually contributed to our team.  or 34%.   Not looking to good going into 2018.

There's no way there were only 38 total free agents brought in.

Back when Mike Shula was hired for our offensive coordinator position, there were two other candidates for the job. Remember who they were?

Pretty sure most folks remember that Hue Jackson (at the time, an offensive assistant with the Bengals) was one of them, but probably only few remember the other guy. It was Pat Shurmur, who at the time had been fired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Shurmur wound up with the Eagles, and later the Vikings.  In fact, he's done such a good job as Vikings OC that he's getting head coach interviews again. Jackson?  He went back to the Bengals for a few more years, eventually rising to the position of offensive coordinator where he did such a solid job that he ended up getting Shurmur's old gig: head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

So basically, our candidate pool that year was two Cleveland head coaches and Mike Shula.

But even with all the stink that comes with being part of the Browns organization, both the other guys have had consistent success as coordinators.  Shula had one good year, got figured out and hasn't yet to get back to being good again.

Yeah...

What's the point of this?  There isn't one.  In the face of seeing two more years of Shula, I'm just wishing we would have gone in a different direction back in 2013.

But you know what they say: Wish in one hand...

Not a knee jerk guy. Have had gripes with Shula and, like any other fan, other parts of the team at any given juncture. But your posts have just become tired.

At the very least, save it for another time.

We get it. There is no substitute for age and experience. You're a football historian. We lemmings know not what to rightly criticize etc etc.

Label it what you like it, but you're more than a buzz kill. Worse yet, you've become the antithesis of the patient, wise one; instead, impatient and first-to-report-it/think-it headline seeking.

I ask this truly. What is the point you're attempting to make? Shurmur, likewise, has had 1 really good year as an OC. And that may be stretching it. "Consistent success" is such a stretch and you know it.

Enjoy your months-long I-told-you-so/pity party. Both parties suck.
