End of Season 3-Round Mock (Updated: Pre-Combine)

1(24) Dante Pettis, WR, Washington (6'1", 188 lbs, 22 yo) - It was started last year but this season we'll look to continue to make some serious investment around Cam.  I've seen Pettis anywhere from the 1st to the 3rd round but, even though the current consensus seems to be 3rd, judging by his production, route running, special teams ability and these number from the start of his junior year,  I can't see him escaping the first.

2(56) Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon (6'5", 310 lbs, 22 yo) - Excellent blocking OT at Oregon but will likely need some seasoning coming from their spread offense.  Constantly described as nasty and has the length our staff loves in lineman too.  Graded anywhere from the late 1st to the 4th.  With some development, he could allow the Panthers to walk away from Kalil, which would go a huge way not only in improving the offense but allowing them flexibility to keep Norwell.  Could also slide in at LG as well if Norwell is lost in free agency.

3(85) James Daniels, C, Iowa (6'4", 295 lbs, 20 yo) - Iowa always churns out lineman and Daniels has been an anchor for them for the last 3 years.  Already a good player and incredibly young so there is a chance for some serious upside as well.  Athletic with length, this potentially could ease the pain of the good Kalil's retirement (who's contract coming off the books if another big cap gain) and solidify the center of our line for the next decade.  I've seen him graded as high as early 2nd down to the 10th center in the draft.

3(88) Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest (6'4", 275 lbs, 22 yo) - Long, athletic and productive with a variety of pass rush moves and the ability to reduce inside on pass rush downs.  Makes a lot of sense in our system.  He's currently going off around the 3rd round.

Secondary needs help but I'm going to grind my teeth on that and kick it to free agency and the later rounds and likely have to attack it early in next year's draft.  Keep an eye out for TEs too because they have been churning through them on the practice squad this year in search of future replacements.  Too unpredictable, so I didn't mock any draft movement.

Id much rather have Christian Kirk with 24 but I guess he could be long gone by then . Pettis looks a bit frail to me but has undeniable speed and separation.

In this senario, we somehow gutted Gettleman who traded up for Baker Mayfield who somehow dropped all the way down to our pick in the 2nd round. trading down in this draft will let us load up on defense ,

Yeah I'm a fan of Kirk currently as well, I'm figuring he'll be gone at 24 by the time the draft rolls around.

I didn't want to mock any trades because they are so unpredictable but with so many vets nearing the end of their contract/careers, I would not be surprised one bit to see Hurney move back (something it seems Gettleman would not have done) to find those guys to develop.

Well theres always trades for QBs in pretty much every draft. Although we have such low picks its not too likely to happen to us, but the possibilities still there .

Trading back at our position isnt a bad thing IMO unless there's  a game breaker that fell all the way to near the end of R1. If theres no one there we really like and have a R2 grade on pretty much everyone left, if you can trade down with a team like Browns, Giants, Colts, or Broncos, thats worth it. Youd get a very high 2nd, and then a high 3rd  or high 4th . I consider picks in R1 - R3 to be the most valuable from a talent perspective, get as many first 3 round dudes as you can,

Seems like the Seahawks do it every year with there pick at the end if the 1st. It's really not a bad play because there's only, what 8 to 12 elite talents in a draft per year, so a game breaker is rarely there at 24 anyway.

I like Pettis as a player, but isn't he projected to go in rounds 3-4? I don't think I've seen him go in the first round in any mock drafts to this point

Most I've seen now are 3rd too but I'm also trying to do a projection for the time of the draft. I'm expecting him to rise throughout the pre draft process.

PRE-COMBINE UPDATE:

1 (24) Billy Price, G/C, Ohio State (6’3”, 312 lbs, 22 yo) – Norwell’s pending free agency could signal a move like this.  Assuming Norwell walks, Price provides immediate starter or (at least competition with Moton) for the LG spot.  In year two, Price could provide a starting center following Ryan Kalil’s retirement.  Most projections and buzz have Price coming off the board in Round 1.

2(56) Kyzir White, SS, West Virginia (6’-2 1/8”, 216 lbs, 21 yo) – Carolina has preferred the safety positions to be almost interchangeable in the past and Kyzir is a thumper as a strong in the box safety but has shown his range in coverage as well.  During senior bowl practices, he showed very well in coverage on TEs and RBs and scored a personal interview with Marty Hurney.  Mike Adams contract is up following the season (and well before Coleman’s) so finding his replacement first seems like the logical step.  White wouldn’t necessarily have to play right away in this scenario if he needed the year of seasoning.  I’ve seen White going anywhere from 2-5 with most having him in early to late 3^rd round range.

3(85) Lorenzo Carter, DE/OLB, Georgia (6’6”, 242 lbs, 22 yo) – This is a slight outside the box projection but could be a big score for the D-Line.  Carter is noted for his speed, athleticism, bend and length. And could add some bulk to play a 4-3 end instead of the OLB in Georgia’s hybrid defense.  He can be used a pass rush specialist early on and if he can add 20 lbs or so and hold that athleticism, Carolina could have stolen a very good DE for years to come.  Carter is showing mostly in the 2-4 round range.

3(88) Jordan Lasley, WR, UCLA (6’1”, 210 lbs, 21 yo) – Lasley fits the profile of the receiver Carolina is likely looking for as an outside receiver with speed and vertical play making ability.  His strengths not only stretch the field and compliment Funchess but allows Carolina to use their shifty play makers (Samuel and McCaffery) to dominate the underneath and from the slot with their separation quickness.  By waiting on a receiver, it also likely signal a free agent addition to fill the role while Lasley is developing.  Lasley is currently showing in the 3-5 round range (character concerns) but a good showing at the combine (especially with a fast 40 time) could send him up teams boards.

Pettis and Kirk are two guys that I love right now because of their ability to get alot of separation off defenders. Pettis is legendary college wise from his returning ability alone but can also burn people down the field recieiving. I'm not so sure wed have to spend a 1st to get him but he might skyrocket up the boards if he posts a fast 40 time while the other big name WRs dont.
