Hurney said a WR that compliments Funchess. Is he looking at Funchess as a #1 WR?

I don't think NFL coaches and front office people spend near the time obsessing about this #1 stuff as fans do. According to people on this forum and their expectations of this mythical beast of a #1 NFL WR there are only a handful of them in the league at any given time.

So Pilares was the only guy that year who was drafted in the 5th round or higher who never recorded an NFL catch

Dwayne Harris is in the next round, is still in the NFL and has never recorded a catch. But, what did those two guys have in common?

My only original point to you was that it is uncommon for WRs drafted in the 4th or 5th round to go their entire career without erecording a catch and that is very much true.

The Hurndog drafted 4 WRs in the 5th round or higher who never recorded a single NFL reception and actually pulled this dubious feat off in 3 consecutive drafts.

You read that right. In three consecutive drafts, Marty Hurney drafted a WR in the 5th round or higher who never caught a football in an NFL regular season or postseason game. That's amazing.

Pilares I am not that surprised about. Adams, admittedly, was a head scratcher. I expected him to be a contributor but he didn't even last past the first season.

I will say that Pilares was one of only five Panthers to ever return a kickoff for a TD in a regular season game. I guess there is that....

So you think we got consistent pressure without blitzing too?

I don't disagree with Hurney that the DL did a good job pressuring the QB. Peppers had 11 sacks, Addison had 11 sacks, Horton added 5.5, Short had 7.5, Star had 1.5.

That's 36.5 sacks from the DL. The problem is that 22 of those sacks came from guys who are 30+ years of age and 11 came from a guy who mat end up retiring.

I was admittedly excited about the Joe Adams pick. That guy was magical in college.

Just to remind people:

I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill in that regard. The results from the DL were pretty clear when it came to rushing the passer. Do you realize that this was the most sacks we have produced as a team since 2013(60 sacks, 40 from the DL)?

That has to be one of the biggest 4th round or lower busts we have ever had. Not only did he not have basically any impact on our team, he was out of the league after one year on our team. Crazy. I was sure he would at least be a starting PR/KR for us.

Love had 3.5 sacks, as well.

It's weird, that's why the draft is such a crap shoot. You just never know how a guy handles the transition from being "the" guy to being "a" guy. Unless you're just an absolute freak athlete, so much of it is about adjusting to the mental and physical rigors of the NFL game vs college.

    • i presented this in another thread. he throws better to the out breaking routes the wr run, but almost nothing to the inside. that is half the options on a wr route tree. How do you run an offense like that?  even the outbreaking routes he throws are moonballs, that allow the DBs to catch up unless the wr is wide open. he has to throw with a lot of anticipation becuase he doesnt have the arm strenght to get it there if he is a little late. thats probably why you see balls behind the wrs.
