Panther news could be heating up next week

The NFL really hates it when the Super Bowl has to share the spotlight with any other football news (they likely weren't too pleased with the Smith trade stuff coming to light). That's why teams often tend to put some action items off until after Super Bowl week.

The Panthers have two rather big news flashes coming up. They'll be naming a GM shortly, and then of course there's the sale of the team. With the Super Bowl - and the NFL season - ended, those things can start moving forward.

Side Note: Remember when the Pro Bowl was the Sunday after the Super Bowl? Yeah, it's much better now that the season ends with the league's biggest game.

I'll be looking forward to seeing what information comes out regarding potential buyers. Also waiting to see whether Ryan Cowden is eventually included in our GM interviews (still prefer Jimmy Raye, but hey...)

So buckle your seatbelts, Panther fans. Things could get really interesting starting Monday or so. Here's hoping they also get better.

Regarding the GM search, anything that happens before a new owner comes in is largely irrelevant. The only important thing is who buys the team. If Hurney is kept or someone else who isn't good is hired, a good new owner would get rid of them swiftly. A bad owner on the other hand and it wouldn't matter who we hire now because we'd have bad people in place anyways. The main thing I'm focusing on is the sale of the team.

The ownership search is definitely the more important item, but the GM search is the one more likely to be resolved first.

Why? Wouldn't whoever buys the team like to manage that process?

The team will have their GM interviews done by next week.  The ownership bidding process is gonna take longer than that.

Now, once somebody buys the team, if they so wish they can undo everything the current officials are doing now, but not until then.

Why is it moving ahead? One theory is pressure from the Fritz Pollard Alliance, their being upset because they believe the team was using the interim tag to duck interviewing a minority candidate.  The other that Richardson is trying to get Hurney entrenched so that the new owners will decide it's easier to just keep him or, at the very least, guaranteeing him one final big payday.

Understood. It's practically Richardson's final move as Owner. Because of that, I'm siding with the latter.

It could actually be both.

General belief was they were willing to sit on Hurney being interim at least through June.  That would have given Hurney a chance to put his stamp on the team and thus next season would have basically been his audition for the new owners to keep him full time.

But then the Pollard Alliance might have spurred them to move.  Or perhaps just realizing that if the new owner takes over soon enough, Hurney's audition season might never happen was enough.

Either way, here we are.

Oh boy oh boy, can't wait until Marty Hurney is named full time GM.

Exactly why it makes sense for Hurney to stay on interim basis until new ownership is settled and then they can hire who they want. Which is likely what will happen.

Are people really expecting the sale of the team to go through during this off-season? I've never had that impression. Even if the new owners are selected by Richardson on Monday, the process for a group buying the team takes quite a while. Richardson isn't technically being forced to sale the team immediately, so he is going to listen to offers during the off season. They aren't going to all come in the next week.

First they've been talking to bidders since we lost. People have been preparing bids since Jerry announced the sale. It's a very small pool of people who could do this and are interested. It's not outlandish they've decided on who will get the bid. This isn't a auction with hundreds of people. The main time is from approvals including from the league and owners. After that(probably voted on in the league meeting) it'll be a done deal.

Secondly the league will want this sale to occur before games start being played. No player coach or gm wants to start a season under such uncertainty. Which to me is why these purely fake extensions and hirings are happening. They are giving a false sense of security from Ron extension and a GM hiring.

I agree. Hurney will still be the interim if he is chosen as full time GM. No matter who buys the team, the new owners are going to hire their people. And GM is at the head of the line. No matter who is chosen now, the owners can replace him in a New York minute. It actually makes sense to strive for someone who can help us the most  in the short term. So do we go with the interim who by most accounts is doing a much better job the second time around, or take a chance on someone who has never been a GM and would be learning on the fly. If this were the decision for the next five years you have time and motivation to develop someone. But if you want a guy who is a veteran GM and can hit the ground running, who else but Hurney would take this job with all the uncertainty. It would have to be an up and coming guy who was  willing to take the job to move up to the GM level. I think you have to make the best choice based on the present and not the past.

    • The only thing I said was he was part of the staff that made part of the decisions, and that I am judging the decisions made by that group as a whole. As assistant GM, you can pretty much guarantee his input held more sway than an intern or the guy that takes coffee requests. Fitterer didn't operate in a vacuum. Neither does Morgan now. While Fitterer did have the ultimate decision, to say that Dan had no input in ranking boards, evaluating FAs, trade offers or anything else would be asinine. We all know he did. Otherwise what the hell was his job as assistant GM? He wouldn't have been kept for 3 years if he was arguing every decision Scott ever made.    And the actual quote was "Morgan has done a bang up job in the draft and FA. Compared to what the last guy did, he is kicking ass and taking names." So is XL kicking ass and Brooks taking names from last years draft or did I get it backwards? We took Wallace over Payton Wilson because he was an injury risk after trading up for a RB with a torn ACL? Which one of the kicking ass and taking names was that?  Maybe we should review the thousands of gameday posts calling for XL to get off the field because he's a bust and can't catch a cold. We could review the posts about Brooks but... And Wilson. He's at 118 tackles this season vs 36 for Wallace.  I gave credit to Dan for a good draft this year. But I'm also not ignoring last year's draft either since he did that one after the last guy too.  That's not a strawman.
    • And then, in week 18, we can take Mayfield out of the game and whoop Bridgewater's @$$ for good measure! Let the former QB revenge train roll on!!
    • If we keep our guards in tact ($$$) and go with Mays at C, some OT depth would be nice. I think we should be happy about CB with Thornton's development (pre injury) and Smith Wade. I think Ransom is developing nicely, but I would like to see a FS type for situations. We suck at ILB and Edge (as a whole). We should be OK at RB.  I hope we sign Dowdle to a short contract. QB?  There are signs of hope and development.  (I don't like our backup QB) TE?  Good draft for TE, but I think we are developing with Evans, Sanders, and Tremble. WR?  A #2 with Coker and Horn in the slot.  XL?  What is that? We should be good in 2026. Morgan does more than draft.  Free agency has been strong too.  (Just emptying my brain on your comment--sorry)
