With the Chiefs adding veteran cornerback David Amerson and, officially in three weeks, acquiring cornerback Kendall Fuller as part of the Alex Smith trade, some in league circles are wondering whether the Chiefs will be making another transaction involving a cornerback.

The question being asked is whether Marcus Peters, a first-round pick in 2015, is available in trade.

Peters has become one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL, but Peters has at times been a bit of a handful for the Chiefs. The situation came to a head last season, when he seemed to try to get himself ejected, then seemed to assume he was ejected when he wasn’t, then returned to the sidelines with his uniform on and socks off, showing no intent to return to action.

The incident, along with an argument with a coach, got Peters suspended for a game. For the Chiefs, it quietly may have been the last straw.

Subject to a fifth-year option, the Chiefs (or whoever holds his contractual rights) will have to decide by early May whether to extend the contract through 2019. As the new league year approaches, Peters has become a name to watch for a possible trade — especially with the guy who drafted him four years ago now the G.M. in Cleveland.

As to the idea, I get the feeling the Chiefs would be asking for more than I hope we're willing to offer.

My first guess would go back to that hotheaded display in the playoffs where he threw the ref's flag into the stands and cost his team big time.

They may think that's not an isolated incident and that he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

That was my point.

All these guys here want him because he was on some highlight reels.  They never question why the other team wants to get rid of this "great corner".  There were questions about his behavior going into the draft, Chiefs paid no attention.

Has he had any arrests or anything like that? I don't recall anything of that sort.

The flags throwing thing was really stupid though, and it hurt his team big time in that playoff game.

As Stirs pointed out above, the Chiefs are going to have a reason for this if they do it. Teams don't let go of good players just because.

People who do not get the character issue obviously never played anything after Madden '04. 

We are investing millions of dollars into these players.  Character is related to discipline, and discipline is related to doing your job. 

NFL.com 2015:  " From speaking with several scouts familiar with Peters and his interaction with the Washington coaches, I've been told that the dismissal stems from his inability to get along with coaches and team officials. Peters reportedly has a strong personality and didn't mind challenging authority about various situations on and off the field. "

Sounds like he never grew up.

These guys aren't mindless drones. They're actual people, with actual personalities, and some of those personalities aren't very good.

The places where we all work likely all have both good people and a--holes. NFL teams aren't immune from that. You want to think they'd all pull together because they're on the same team. That doesn't always happen.

And for whenever people like to talk about us having great locker room chemistry, well, a big reason for that is that we tend not to sign known a--holes.
