Rivera acknowledges"all in" approach to this season

I wouldn't have read too much into this if Gettleman was still GM, but with Hurney back in charge I feel like all bets are off.

For some reason I've had a hunch for weeks now that we're going to make a BIG splash this offseason, but via a major trade rather than a FA signing or draft day trade-up.

Who that might be, who knows, but I feel like it could be our best bet as far as upgrading the WR corp. Martavis Bryant has been mentioned and would make sense, but there were rumors before the trade deadline last fall that the Colts were shopping T.Y. Hilton.

I also wouldn't be shocked if the Bengals end up at least entertaining offers for A.J. Green given they seem closer to rebuild mode than win now mode these days.

Coach of year twice--  " average "  .

This is the Huddle.

So true. Many Huddlers (and Panther fans in general) don't seem to realize how good we have it with Rivera.

Is he perfect? No. But every coach has flaws and weaknesses. When you take a step back and look at the big picture of Rivera's coaching tenure it should be clear that this team could do a LOT worse:

 - 2x NFL Coach of the Year

 - 64–47–1 Head Coaching Record. That's well above average at a .576 winning percentage.

 - 3 coordinators hired as head coaches out of the 7 years he's been a head coach.

 - Coached the Panthers to 3 straight NFC South titles and back-to-back (to back) playoff appearances for the first time in franchise history, including a Super Bowl berth.

 - Coached the Panthers to the playoffs in 4/7 seasons he's been here and 4 out of the last 5 seasons. This after taking over a disaster of a team coming off a 2-14 season in 2010.

I'm not saying Rivera doesn't have flaws or tendencies that I'd rather see him change, but he has been a steady presence and a very successful head coach by any remotely realistic and/or fair standards anyone can hold him, too.

In a league where people like Jim Tomsula, Vance Joseph, Ben McAdoo, and Hue Jackson get to be head coaches, we're damn lucky to have someone like Ron Rivera.

These quotes are a microcosm of what makes Ron such an average head coach.

"I could be fired, so I better really make this year count."

It's the same thing that birthed "Riverboat Ron". A sense of urgency to win should be an innate characteristic in a head coach, not something that pops up every few years when your job is on the line.

Couldn't agree with this more

His greatest strength  is that he is a great motivator, To get us into the playoffs last year ,with the poo storm encompassing the panthers, was amazing.

But, again, he's average.

Ron is a great motivator, and he's a fantastic defensive mind, but he's not a very good gameday coach, not at all.

On gamedays, Rivera gets outcoached fairly often. It's a big reason why we have to win a fair amount of our games at the last second or by holding off a late surge by the other team.

Part of what I think has hurt Rivera on this front is that he never had a "mentor" on staff. A lot of first-time head coaches hire a former head coach as a coordinator, sometimes even as a position coach or just a consultant. They serve to help a new coach understand how to navigate the responsibilities and handle the position. Basically, like a trainer would on other jobs.

Rivera never had that, but he might now in Turner.

My big hope is that Turner can help fill in some of the gaps in Rivera's coaching persona and help him to be a more complete, well rounded coach. If that happens, then maybe we can be a more complete team.
