Final look at best positional values at 24 and 55

I've  been trying to get a clearer picture of what positions are going to have the biggest run on them before our 1st and 2nd round picks. Using history as a barometer this should be close to what we can expect at the positions most talked about on here for the first 2 picks.

 http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?position=WR&type=position

FT= Franchise tag cost by position

Averages for the first 23 picks over last 6 years breaks down like this:

  • WR 3.16  FT =16 Million
  • CB 3        FT = 15 Million
  • DE 2.67   FT = 17 Million
  • S 1.33     FT = 11 Million
  • RB 1        FT = 12 Million
  • G/C .667 FT = 14 Million
  • TE .667   FT= 9.8 million

Averages for top 54 are here:Parentheses is the most taken in the first 54 picks in one draft over last 6 years

  • CB 7.16 (9 )
  • WR 6.83 (9,twice)
  • DE 6.16 (8, twice)
  • S  3 (5)
  • RB 3 (4)
  • G/C2.5 (4)
  • TE 2.33 (5)

Reminder of snaps count's lost this offseason.

OFFENSE

  1. Norwell: 1066, 100%
  2. Dickson: 533, 48.68%
  3. Stewart: 403, 37.80%
  4. Kailen Clay, 176,16.51%

*** Of course he's still currently on the team but we can not have Russell Shepard play 479 snaps and 44.93% of the offensive snaps again this year

Is the answer on the roster for any of these positions?

  • LG: I  Amini started 3 games at RG last year, Moton started 0. Plausible he could be the answer but I don't want to bank on it.
  • 2ND TE:We can all agree 100% Manhertz is not the answer.
  • 2ND RB: We not only need to replace Stewarts snaps but also need improved play from the position. Cap is not the guy for the job imo.
  • WR, well the only thing we know we have for sure is Funchess. However he's in the last year of his rookie deal and who knows if he's in the plans long term or not just yet. This season should clear that up. Behind him we have Samuel and Byrd returning plus the additions of Torrey Smith and Jairus Wright. If Funchess goes down this would be devastating to us.

DEFENSE

  1. Worley, 726, 72.89%
  2. Coleman, 716, 71.89%
  3. Star, 586, 70.38%
  4. Johnson, 389,39.06
  • CB2, Cockrell is the answer and upgrade we are looking for to replace Worley.
  • FS, this is similar to Stewart on offense, we not only need a body there but an upgrade over Coleman. Is Searcy that? In a word no. Best case scenario is he's a wash.
  • DT, Duh, Poe is a beast and will bring everything to the table Star did plus some.
  • DE,  Peppers actually played more than CJ last year. So him and Addison will make up our primary pass rushers. Plus we still have Horton and Hall returning for his redshirt rookie season.

Lastly we have current or potential starters under contract through at least 2019 at the same positions mentioned above.

RB,Mccafrrey and CAP

CB, Bradberry and Cockrell

WR, Smith, Wright and Samuel??

DE, Addison and Hall (They are the only 2 DE's under contract for 2019)

G, Turner, (Sirles signed a 1 year deal and Silatolu's contract expires after this year)

S - Searcy (this is last year of Adam's deal)

TE- NONE (Last year of Olsen's deal)

C- NONE (Last year of Kalil and Larsen's deals)

Granted we will have a ton cap space and a new slew of picks in 2019 to address these needs if we fail to do so in this draft.

Most ideal possibilities/strategy for the 24th pick based on all of this to me would be

  1. Davenport or Landry (DE) - Future DE to groom behind Peppers, join pass rush rotation this year
  2. Ridley (WR) - Can compete with Funchess for number 1 spot day 1 and gives Cam another target who can get open
  3. Alexander or Jackson (CB) - Would start day 1 over Cockrell or Bradberry
  4. Trade back and get top T.E - We used Dickson a lot, so this player would see immediate snaps and replace Olsen in Future
  5. Sit tight and take best O-lineman who can play G/C - Norwell was our biggest loss this offseason. Can replace him with a rookie at a fraction of the cost and give us an option to replace R. Kalil next year at center.

Your assessment is definitely wrong if the first desired result is DE.

Also known as busts just because you pick a player based on position names :eyeroll:

We don’t need another Ealy DG FUPA man

I don't think either fall to us but Davenport/Landry would be BPA regardless of position at 24 imo.

Yea if your looking at it generally, but for the Panther they wouldn’t be BPA at all.

Will Hernandez > DE 24/7

please look at Panthers scheme before making assessment.

I agree that if a top DE falls to us, we take them for sure.

I also think a guard/center would be a great move.  R Kalil is gone after this season (maybe sooner if he gets hurt again) and we need a dependable player to take his role.

Yea how many percentage of snaps is DE going to play vs RB, OG, TE, Wr.etc not only this season but the following when we still have holes on the team.

Saying DE is the top prospect is basically a cop out.

I'm kinda hoping we just get Ridley.

He'd be exactly what we need explosive as ever we're underestimating his game speed, his big game performances in big games. T Smith or JB can't be the big time WR you give your big time QB (CC voice) Come On MAN!!!

One great thing about football is that Eye test usually over rules opinionated numbers.

If your eye test doesn't say stud workhorse playmaker for Ridley I don't know what to say.

Over Ridley or he's not availing in this scenario?
