Matt Ryan Contract Details

Quote
First, Ryan has a whopping $94.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. The remaining $5.5 million in guarantees for injury only at signing are, as a practical matter, fully guaranteed. Indeed, the only way to avoid the $5.5 million would be to cut Ryan after one year — and to owe him $94.5 million without the opportunity to offset any of the cash to be paid later.

Second, there is no fluff in the deal. No per-game roster bonuses, no workout bonuses, no incentives. It’s “all clean cash,” as the source explained it.

Third, if Ryan had opted to go year to year, he would have made $19.25 million this year, $25.98 million under the franchise tag in 2019, and $31.176 million in 2020. That’s a three-year haul of $76.406 million. Under the new contract, Ryan will make $94.5 million.

Fourth, in the non-guaranteed years, the Falcons will have to decide early whether to move on from Ryan, given the $7.5 million due on the third day of the 2022 and 2023 league years.

Fifth, the new-money value is $30 million per year, which is a record. The full value at signing — six years, $169.25 million — is $28.2 million. (That’s not quite as good as $28.3 million, but in one specific way it’s a lot better.)

So Ryan has set a new bar. And it won’t be easy for the Packers and Aaron Rodgers to overcome it. We’ll explain that in further detail in a separate post.

For now, the point is this: Ryan has gotten a record-setting deal, and he’ll likely be a Falcons for the next six years, and probably beyond.

Wow the Falcons are retarded.

You’re right. Falcons should have not payed him and let their franchise QB go to another team.

He's 33 and the team had complete leverage for the next 3 years. Hamstringing your team by fully guaranteeing any 33 year old player about $100M is retarded, especially when you have all the leverage over that player. Just flat out stupid. If Ryan's play slips or he gets hurt which gets more and more likely every year, you guys are completely fuged.

But they needed to overpay

That's the thing, they did not need to overpay at all. They had all the leverage in negotiations. There was no reason at all to set and unprecedented level of guarantees like that. The amount per year isn't a big deal and yeah that'll look cheap in a few years but $100M fully guaranteed is completely retarded when you have him under your control for nearly $30M less than that for the next 3 years if you just play the franchise tag game.

Yeah you franchise him until he agrees to a more team friendly deal. This is absurd.

His cap hits for the next 4 years actually isn’t that bad. Falcons should still be able to sign their defensive studs and Jake Matthews coming up.

    • Best thread of the offseason. 10/10
    • Yes we are weak at 2C,  I wouldnt say C overall just we have Aho and then 3 guys who should be third Cs.....   If we dont aquire someone I suspect we will finally see Jarvis at center this year.   I see what you mean with Freddie, and I agree to an extent I think we should limit his regular season starts and focus on keeping him healthy for the playoffs.    He has been very good in the post season contrary to what some casuals think we DID not lose because of Freddie....  2.02 GAA and a .907 %  We lost to florida because our small offensive D men couldn't keep the Panthers from parking right in front of him.
    • In theory that would be nice, but i can almost guarantee you no one who will be an upgrade will be available.... much less a "stud"  This is a list of goalies who are free agents in 2026 aka possibly be sold at the deadline..... the only one I see that might help us is a retread in Ned.... (honestly should have never gotten rid of him hes performed admirably in much worse situations since leaving).
