And a profile of Alan Kestenbaum...

He wants to make money. That means taking it from us, the city, or reducing costs. I would bet on all three with an emphasis on the first 2.

This sounds like the kind of guy that would want a dome with parking going in his pockets.

Sabates said two of the four potential owners wanted a domed stadium. We know Navarro doesn't.

It's not hard to think Kestenbaum is one of the two.

Just a quick thank you to Me. Scot for keeping us all up to date on the sale stuff. No time and terrible internet means threads like these are a great way for me to stay in the loop.

Appreciate it.

Don't feel like I'm doing anything special but happy to help.

Yea, thanks @Mr. Scot. I’ve enjoyed reading these owner profiles. We don’t have too much information out there, so every little bit helps.

This is the first really deep profile of him associated with the Panthers sale that I've seen. Heck, I didn't find all that much even unrelated.

I get the feeling reporters haven't been paying all that much attention to Kestenbaum. Tepper and Navarro are the ones that garner all the attention.

Tepper's kind of a larger than life character, hence the New York magazine interview. Navarro is more of a quiet humble guy, but he seems to have become the favorite at the local media (and fans).

Kestenbaum? Honestly, not especially interesting. And I don't really think all that many people take his bid as seriously as they do the others, even though he's probably outbid Tepper.

But yeah, now we finally got enough info on him to make a "first impression".

Sad to say, I don't think it was a very good one.

He seems fine to me. The team to team jump was a bit cringeworthy, but I didn’t see a problem with anything else. Sounds like he’ll do whatever to win and he’d make the panthers more marketable outside of the Carolinas. I can dig it.

The heavy emphasis on profit kinda bugged me more so than the team switching stuff.

It might be a little unfair on my part, but the more I read (and re-read) that article, the more I started thinking of Dan Snyder.

I think that depends on how much he plans on meddling. Snyder was/is like a mediocre fantasy football owner. He says he will meddle but how much is the question.

I'd prefer "not at all".

Navarro's profile is to hire good people and let then run things. That, to me, is ideal.

Switching team allegiance seems like something a powerful New York businessman would do.... he cannot tolerate incompetence. This can be good and bad. If Ron blows a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter, he might be gone the next day.

I don't think the fan mentality of loyalty should be a real talking point here... Owners are just not like us. Tepper is a Steelers fan and he will be a year from now if he doesn't buy the Panthers.

Eh....I mean....I can see it both ways. I understand his point that he views himself as ensuring that his investment is on the right path. I think most owners have some influence, perhaps that is meddling as well. But then there is the level of micromanaging that can be detrimental(Snyder, Jerry Jones, etc). Whether that is real or perceived is debatable, I suppose.

When I read the quotes about his switching allegiances at the drop of a hat, that is worrisome. Probably more so with the quote about him meddling. If you are mercurial and meddlesome.....that does not sound like a good owner in the making.

Felix Sabates says he turned down an offer to join Kestenbaum last week.

Quote

When local sports investor and car dealer Felix Sabates hosted Carolina Panthers bidder Alan Kestenbaum last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, he made clear — again — that the asking price is too high. Even for a minority stake in the NFL franchise.

Kestenbaum asked Sabates, who briefly led a Charlotte group seeking to buy majority control of the team, whether Sabates would consider coming aboard as a limited partner and bringing some fellow investors along.

“I told him, ‘No,’” Sabates told CBJ on Tuesday. “It doesn’t make business sense.”

Sabates said that once the price eclipsed $1.7 billion, it was over-inflated. Forbes pegged the Panthers’ worth at $2.3 billion in September 2017 as part of the financial magazine’s annual NFL franchise valuation, ranking Carolina 21st among 32 clubs.

Panthers price too high for return

Yeah, I know Felix is full of it, but this is probably true.  Kestenbaum has confirmed that he and Sabates talked last week during his visit.

Sounds like Kestenbaum is trying to jump ahead of Navarro.  Also potentially could mean, as some have theorized, that Richardson's asking price has gone up.

The issue is, if he's all about the money, that doesn't equate to winning in Charlotte.   He can simply cater to all the northern fans down here when their teams come in and still make bank because of how the team is setup.     It doesn't sound reassuring to me.
