Consultant or Team President

I've floated Omar Khan as a team president option before.

He's basically Kevin Colbert's second in command with the Steelers, and his background is more "analyst" than scout. Also said it'd be a huge coup if we could steal Colbert from the Steelers with a "promotion" but that ain't happenin'.

One thing: As our friend Woodie pointed out, it's possible the Rooneys might have asked Tepper not to poach any of their people till next season. That'd mesh with taking a year to get the lay of the land anyway (something many people expect Tepper to do).

If that's the case, a consultant seems far more likely.

Candidates for the consultant would include Ernie Accorsi, Ron Wolf, Charley Casserly, Tony Dungy, Carl Peterson and even our old friend Bill Polian.

(wouldn't that be interesting)

Reading it quickly--thought it was "Keary Colbert ".

I thought the cheerleader lady was the team president.

She is COO, for now. But she's widely considered to be JR's puppet. It's not clear how qualified she is.... It's not just that she was a cheerleader, or hand-picked by Jerry. But having given no interviews / statements or any kind of public appearance adds to the impression that she is merely a figurehead. Fairly or unfairly.

I  looked it up because I am confused about the difference between a president or coo or ceo and it can be the same position depending on how the team owner sets it up.  Apparently if differs from team to team and what one team calls a president another might call the CEO or COO or they might have both.

Any way why could we not have a team president/CEO and hire a consultant as well?  Didn't we hire Acorsi when we still had a team president?  I would bet Acorsi advised on more than who to hire as a gm.

Our previous team president has a non-football role.

Titles and job descriptions in the NFL are extremely flexible. Most team presidents (among the few teams that have one) do have authority over football operations, though the top person in charge of most teams is the general manager.

There are actually several teams whose front office includes multiple vice presidents, but no president.

Most of the ones I read about don't.  Although some teams call him the CEO.

IMO, it makes sense to split business and personnel operations.  GM's should focus exclusively on football,  while ticket sales/plane charters etc... should reside in anothe area.

Some of the guys who get the job - Polian, for example - are really just GMs with a different title.

Heck, technically you could call a guy Douchebag in Charge of Nothing in Particular if you wanted (there's probably at least a few guys who deserve it).

Do not particularly want Accorsi, definitely don't want casserly or polian.

I actually would be talking to Danny Morrison tho.

Even if it's a football role, though?

I don't believe Morrison was an enabler or anything, but to bring him back you still have to account for the close association with Richardson.

PLEASE NO ERINE ACOSSI!!! All he is going to do is hire one of his old colleagues....Last time it was Dave Gettleman, this time it would be Jerry Resse

They all hire their friends. That's why you have to pick the right consultant.

To be fair, Accorsi just sets up the interviews. It's the team that makes the decision. And the guy that got the Detroit job (Quinn) was not an Accorsi colleague.

If we're talking Accorsi friends though, I think Kevin Abrams gets a call before Jerry Reese. Marc Ross might too.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
