Wow this thread went to poo fast. To be fair this is a pretty purposeless topic. How the fug did this even come up?

Only sentiment I have: i wonder how many of those bashing Steve Smith for his character gets pissed off when we don’t sign, trade or draft players with character concens........

Furthermore, his character is what made him so great.  That chip he wore his entire career whether on the practice field or in a game.  You were not going to beat SS at anything.  He was a true competitor.

Off the field he was a model citizen.

As far as blocking.  Obviously you (not you personally Casillas) didn't see many games.  Many times Smitty was out in front.  I have seen him take out three or for defenders.    Another mindless, factless comment.

I have come to realize that this hater is just feeding fuel to the fire.   I guess he needs the post count to go up.

Your evidence is not particularly compelling. Most people would agree that Smith had his character flaws but using that reasoning to trash him just makes it seem like you have a personal ax to grind rather than even attempting to make a coherent argument as to why he should be excluded from any franchise accolades. Perhaps that is your personal criteria for what constitutes merit as a Panther but you have to admit that it clearly does not align with the majority of the fans and likely not with the franchise itself.

actually i believe that more people agree than you think, but might be afraid of a sucker punch if they voice their opinion, i kid, kind of.  But anyway..put him in some rind of honor, but no statue or jersey retired

why??  Because he demanded the ball while he was here...got pissed when he didnt get the ball?  He prolly should have put better numbers than he has

Put it this way. He is the only WR that could do what he did since he was a small player he was deadly and nobody could defense him. He gave teams fits because he could not be stopped.

I would be highly surprised if it was even a significant minority of our actual fan base.

I mean, that was an interesting thing to infer from my post. But, you have been rather absolutist the entire thread so I am not surprised.

I've been thinking about it, originally I thought statue seemed over the top but retired jersey is not just appropriate but expected...after this conversation I'm not even sure that is enough anymore.  Here is my new vision:

Name the new stadium after him when we build one however many years from now.

"Welcome to Steve Smith field at Steve Smith stadium.  Be sure to check out the Steve Smith museum located on Steve Smith Drive next adjacent to the stadium on your way out!"

Giant stone engravings above every entrance:  "ICE UP SON"

Nah, but if you sucker punch one of your friends or family on the way through the gate you get a free upgrade to box seats, open bar.

See how I am wondering how you inferred any of that from my statements?

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
