Steve Smith....lets put this to a end

If Smitty wasn't unceremoniously released by Gettleman would opinions differ at all?

Smitty did some unsavory stuff for sure but has grown and matured as a man.

Seeing the same thing now with Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers. Here's a poor kid who managed to get off Castro's island and suddenly finds himself thrust into the spotlight in LA and a millionaire to boot. He did some dumb things/behavior but has now matured and has charities going etc. Was watching him early pregame at dodger Stadium a couple weeks back spending time with kids making their day.

Smitty will be the only true Panther Hall of Famer...until Cam retires.

Statue.

Ray Lewis has a statue, and he killed a guy.

Peyton Manning has one, and he flashed his pecker to an athletic trainer at UT.

It's not a testament to moral character.  It's a symbol of the most bad ass person the franchise has ever seen.  In Carolina, that is Smitty.

both have 4 superbowls between them. Cam is the most bad ass person this franchise has ever seen. I think 89 should be in the hall with his name in the ring of honor and jersey retired. Gotta save the statue for whoever brings home the Lombardi

we praise the guy like he is some kind of saint...and he is far from it......

how would we tear down a statue of on person and then put one of him...

Steve Smith is the exact opposite of a saint. He is a Panther, the best Panther to ever play.

he is not the best panther that has ever played...and Cam is passing him as we speak, so is Luke....he might not even be in the top 5

First, my two cents:

  • Undecided if Smitty is the greatest Panther of all time. Cam is close. Peppers, Kuechly, TD and Sam Mills all deserve mention in that conversation. For me its a photo finish between Cam and Smitty. If Cam wins us a Super Bowl, he will instantly become the greatest and it wont be close.
  • That said, all the men I just listed deserve a statue. Of the men who deserve a statue, Smitty and TD are the ones I would most like to replace the Richardson bust between the panthers.
  • Smitty's number should also be retired. Before Cam, he was hands-down the greatest player to have been a part of this team.
  • Smitty was who he was. He was no more chippy and violent than others. But he was never dirty. He certainly did many-a-cornerback dirty, but was never a dirty player. Yes, he had a fire that NO ONE was exempt from, not even his teammates. But we always knew that. No one seriously criticized him for it like this troll OP is doing until after Gettleman unceremoniously released him. On that note...
  • Gettleman made a mistake in how he released Smith, and in hindsight, its obvious the very act of releasing Smith was a mistake as well. Smith's reaction should have come as a surprise to no one, and if you criticize him for it but never cared about his fire when he was a Panther... you are the definition of intellectual inconsistency.

TLDR: GET THE MAN A STATUE AND RETIRE HIS NUMBER.

Look Im a conservative and I gotta say, fvck you for making this political. Everyone acts like a baby over politics once in a while, so to single out any one side is just messed up. Ive seen liberals, communists, conservatives, libertarians, RHINOS, Trumpists, and even anarchists act like complete idiotic babies before. Hell, I myself did that recently on this very board. It happens. gtfo with your divisiveness.

yeah the guy who did the same type of chit Jerry Richardson did is a "actually a good dude". We'll go with that....

based on that statement, you probably don't think JR should have divested himself from the team do you?

no way in hell does he deserve a statue....and if he were to get one then Jerrry's shouldnt come down.  No i am glad Jerry is gone, he did some bad things and it needed to happen a long time ago.  But at the same time steve needs to go into the ring of honor and nothing else....I am ready to see another 89 running around catching passes that not a douche like steve

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
