Saints trade 3rd round pick for Bridgewater - what would your reaction have been if Hurney did the same?

Turns out the Saints do not have an agreement for a reworked contract in place, and are talking about "being patient" before doing anything.

I generally agree with being patient, but if you wind up having traded a 3rd rounder for a one year backup, yikes!

I hate the Saints but this is actually a smart move. They will end up getting a comp pick of a 3rd or 4th if he walks due to the insane contracts qbs are getting now. He is 25 and as long as his knee is good he will demand big money. Could be a future starter, gets to learn behind Brees, and they received the jets 6th round pick plus a comp pick if he leaves after this season

If he rides the bench all year he isn't going to get a monster contract from anyone. If anything he'll be in the same position he was this past offseason. There's ZERO guarantee they get any compensation for him, and even if they do they've kicked that can now two seasons down the road.

Saints mortgaged their future for their present. If they win the Superbowl it won't matter, but if they don't they done fuged up.

The benifits outweigh the negatives however. A starting QB is the most valuable position in the nfl, look at the contracts that have been handed out recently....he can absolutely get paid huge money while riding the bench all year. Look at what the Texans paid to Brock just to give up draft picks to trade out of the contract, also look at Glennon with the bears last year. Teddy was a pro bowl QB and the only issue has had was the terrible injury. If that has healed fully and he has games in the preseason like he just did people will pay big for him.

Again, that's the risk. Sure he looked great in the preseason would you want the Panthers to hand out a monster contract to him, especially in the same breath as huge whiffs such as Brock and Glennon. The idea is that teams have smartened up. I mean look at Tyrod Taylor, the Bills made the playoffs with him and traded him away.

QB is by far the most valuable asset on an NFL team, but a QB on a rookie contract is even more valuable. QB on mega contracts hurt your overall team build.

Bridgewater is a proven q.b who was/is considered a franchise quarterback and who was selected to the probowl. The only issue was his knee injury. If he has recovered, he is well worth a third round pick. They received a 6th and will get a comp pick if he leaves. If he does not leave he could be a possible starting replacement for Brees. If Brees goes down a few games I would feel much better about Teddy backing up by QB than our current situation. Remember we traded our 4th for a punter a few years back. I am a die hard panther fan but his is not a bad move for them. It is low risk high reward for a starting QB

That is widely regarded as a bad trade even for people who liked Gettleman such as myself

Low risk it is not. They traded away a third rounder, that's a significant pick. Pretty sure the Saints got Kamara in the third round. Kamara vs. a guy who could walk away at the end of the season is not low risk, it's a risk but they had to do it because their cards are all in for this season

Let's put it this way. If Bridgewater is such a sure bet, why didn't the Saints just sign him for pennies this offseason?

Payton and Loomis talked about it last night.
