Simple, to set the bar.  At that time, nobody had earned the right to be listed as starter, but Amini had at least been a starting LG in the league.  So, he set the base for what was needed to start.  If nobody else could better his level of play, then they didn't deserve to start, and we'd likely have been scouring other team's rosters to find a better option.

However, I do think they felt pretty good about Moton's ability to take the starting spot.  And if Williams had not gotten injured so early, I believe he would have likely taken over Amini's spot in short order (Ron doesn't like to just give guys positions, he likes them to earn it, so he also wanted to make Moton earn the starting spot).  But when Williams got injured, they had to take a step back and re-evaluate.  Other than pre-existing hate for Amini, nobody else had done anything in their careers that would indicate they deserved to jump him, whether it was a game or practice reps .

Fortunately, Van Roten stepped up and earned the spot, and Mahon has shown good potential to possibly be the future.  Now Ron can keep Silatolu where he likes him best...utility lineman.

I hope he keeps him there.  I'm not convinced he will.

I'm even less convinced that Moton stays at left tackle once Kalil is healthy.  Really hope I'm wrong there.

I agree on Moton.  The main reason there, I think, would be if either the team doesn't want to deal with the growing pains of Kalil learning RT in the middle of the year, or Kalil resists the move and they just want to get the best OT talent on the field.

One thing that is definitely in Moton's favor is that, if reports are accurate that Kalil may not be back until after the bye, he will have several games to show he deserves to keep the LT spot.

Hasn't Kalil played right tackle before?

Could have sworn the Vikings had him there for at least a little bit. I remember when he came here, he said something about being a left tackle.

No idea.  I though he has always been a LT, but don't know if that's accurate.  It would be great if he has played RT before.

I'd have to look it up to be sure but my sense is that he got moved to right tackle and didn't like it.

Personally, I don't care if he likes it or not...and I don't mean that in an ugly way, but the coaches have to do what's in the best interests of the team.  If Moton dominates at LT in Kalil's absence, that's who should be playing LT.

No argument.

Voth saying in Grill Bill that after the trade for Robinson...we like our OL depth.  Yikes.

In other words, there isn't anyone available from cuts or through trade that is any better than what we have, so lets try and boost the guys we are stuck with.

Egads. Hadn't read Grill Bill yet. That's terrifying.

Not surprising given the incredible scarcity of OT talent around the league, but still, this is a nightmare.
