A glimpse into why.Obada made the team over Hall

In Ron's post-practice presser yesterday, there was a brief discussion of why Obada made the roster.

https://www.panthers.com/video/rivera-had-to-make-tough-decisions

(thé section in question starts at around 2 minutes)

I thought it was quite an interesting little glimpse of Ron's evaluation process. He mentioned going back and looking at tape from last year's camp. Could you see clear evolution and progress in the player?

Sounds like for Obada and Cox the answer was a resounding yes. For Hall, implied, the answer was no, to such an extent that we didn't even bring him back to the PS.

It's exciting to think we've got a player as hungry and coachable on the 53 as Obada. Let's hope he continues to improve and gets a chance to flash. It could be a struggle for him to be active on game days due to numbers...

Good catch. Also, I'm sure it's been discussed here but I just (ironically) discovered the series Undiscovered on Youtube that follows a few of the international guys trying to make it to the NFL and am watching 2017's series. You can really tell how hungry and motivated Efe is. It's truly remarkable how far he has come in such a short amount of time relative to all of his peers who have been playing football their entire lives. I liked him before as an underdog but seeing him even closer and his desire to get better and use football as a tool to better his life just makes it impossible not to root for this guy.

I believe Efe is usually among the first out on the practice field each day.

What a steal he will be if he comes in and records 4 or 5 sacks during the season.  He has JP, who is a freak of nature, to continue teach him everything he knows about the position.

Not comparing Efe to JP but what drew NFL Scouts to him was his size, speed and quickness and the guy had only been in football a year or two.

It is amazing that this guy has gone from putting a uniform on for the first time at age 22 to making an NFL roster at 26.   Just think of how many busts there were that have been playing their whole lives.  Pretty remarkable.

[One other really interesting nugget in this video comes at around 6:15. - Ron talks about putting Seymour on IR and admits there was gamesmanship involved in downplaying his injury so our big need at corner wasn't obvious.

Thus suggests we hoped to land another corner in recent days but that it hasn't worked out, yet.]

It just occurred to me that players signed after week one are better for us CAP wise than if we sign before the season.

Or something like that.

Which begs the follow up question, "why go to all that trouble only to unveil your motives before a replacement is secured"?

I’m still kind of at a loss about Hall. I get wanting to see progression from one training camp to the next but Hall was IRed his first year. Gotta be more to it then that. Maybe he wasn’t putting in the time like Cox and Obada. To just cut a 3rd round pick after essentially one training camp is not common at all.

Yeah, I did wonder that too. Ron's not necessarily very GOOD at gamesmanship even though he's trying, LOL. But I guess the move to put Seymour on IR made our need at corner obvious....

I don't know personally and Rivera wasn't going to trash a guy he just cut but I don't think he was putting in the time to be better.

Just another DG blunder.  He took a gamble that Hall was part of a Tandem and it appears he just benefited from the 1st pick tailcoat.

It's sad to see him go but if who we have on the PS has a higher upside it is better to release him and move on.   I think the lack of anyone picking him up just shows that they didn't see much on tape either.

Yeah, the fact that he didn't get claimed by the Cardinals, Bills or Giants is pretty telling.

Wilks DID grab one of our DE cuts, but he went with Zach Moore over Hall.

    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
    • Nah we just talking about giving a platform and normalizing predators (who both beat women) opinions and celebrating it if it fits your narrative.  If that's fun I'm fine being a miserable fug by not supporting P.O.S like that. N b4 you call me a libtard or some other dumb ish know I'm an Anarchist/Libertarian and believe both these dudes should get a complete ass whooping (at min) or something worse for what they have done to women in this world.
