Things I Hope To See Moving Forward*

These are things I think would help Carolina close out the rest of the season, and overall would benefit the team.

1) Offensive tempo to start the game, every game, at the least the first two drives to try to score early and put a team on their heels, we don't have the 2015 defense anymore, we need to get up on teams, and make their offenses a little more predictable

2) Stop the Empty sets, these feel like, and often end up being a sack waiting to happen

3) Remember when the defense was struggling early under McDermott and Ron took over the play calling for the rest of the season, I think Washington is over-whelmed at this point, I think we need a steadying hand. I can't just sit here and say that Short, Poe, Addison are just playing poorly, there's too much talent there, and the secondary is holding up their end of the bargain over all IMO. The rush is just not getting home. So that makes me wonder, game-plan / scheme wise are we putting these guys in the best position to succeed.

4) I've been a Funchess supporter, and I still like him as the big body, but he's got to be the 3rd option at receiver to Moore, and Samuel at this point. And maybe it's unfair because Slay is a top tier corner, but when I see Moore turn that same DB around AND he falls over it just makes me fell like it's time to pass the reigns. In regard to Samuel he was HUGE on that drive leading up to Moore's TD. Those two with CMC need to be the focal points, Funchess, Smith, Wright need to cover the depth, and Olsen is still a great compliment to it all.

Slay is a really good corner. He also had little to do with the 5? drops Devin had on Sunday.

Devin had a bad game, but I also don't think he's a number one, he's shown some ability, but I don't like that he's getting more reps than Samuel. I know we hear a lot a lot about Cam sailing passes at times, but he seems to have the ''most'' success with smaller fast receivers that create larger throwing lanes and a little more room for error by being more open.

Smith / Ginn / Brown -- in their own rights were legitimate threats with Cam more so than KB, or Funchess have been to date.

I'd also like to see more Byrd, I like YAC, and I like explosive plays on some more of the gimme throws, slants, quick ins, etc.

There is really only two things the Panthers need to do to fix their issues.

#1) Generate a pass rush. This is the biggest problem by FAR the team has right now. The Lions gave up 16 sacks their previous two games and the Panthers couldn't even get pressure let alone sacks. That bodes very poorly for the rest of the season.

#2) Rivera needs to hold himself and the entire team accountable. Stop with the veteran days off. Julius Peppers is playing like he's not practicing because he isn't. Eric Washington needs to be put on notice. Another poor defensive outing, and you'll be fired. This "Everything is fine" mentality the team has had all year needs to be shot and killed. Everything is NOT fine and things need to be fixed by the next game or the season will slip away, and everyone might be out of the job at the end of the season.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
