The Career Arc

Definitely not trigger happy.

The steelers laid their egg, but they will be back— they did just lose their bye to the Patriots,.. again,..

there are definitely some interesting coaches out there.  Bruce Arians would be my pick if he would be coaxed,..

Going back to the offensive coach thing—

the Saints this year quietly have the number 1 run defense,... 73 yards per game, no one over 70 rushing yards, held Atlanta to 1.6 yards per carry,..Giants, Gurley,. All under 50 yards.

they also have a top 5 rushing attack.

So people are all about the air raid attacks but the thing that goes unnoticed and unmentioned is the defense and running game of teams that can win the Super Bowl.

the key mentioned for the Saints in the ESPN article I’m too lazy to link said it’s their front 7, no scheme change from last year— just execution from the linebackers—- a position others have said is “worthless” now.

we do need a new coach, one that works relentlessly on details like Belicheck does— players coming out of New England stress that’s the biggest difference— repetitions and attention to details, execution above all else.

Lombardi was about that too. Focus on detail and execution above all else.

Rivera never has the team ready to play— maybe ready in spirit but never in reality.

Bruce Arians is not an option.

Didn’t say he was,.. just my choice.

everyone wants a new coach but no one is happy with anyone’s choices,..

Defilippo seems like a good option, so does Sean Payton’s assistant although he may be waiting for Sean to retire(if Brees wins the Super Bowl this year and hangs it up, its possible Sean does too)

Arians has specifically stated to his bosses at CBS that there's only one coaching opportunity he'd leave the booth for. It's not us. It's the Browns.

There are, however, very promising options available next year.

Pederson right now is the real new hire hero,.. taking Phily and winning with Nick Foles? Wow. Proved that defense and running game along with a prime time quarterback can take it all the way MVP be damned.

What Pederson did last year was truly amazing, but its already looking like it might have been a 'lightning in the bottle' situation. How do you go from Super Bowl champs to under .500 the next season?

Howie Roseman probably has a lot to do with that too.

The Eagles really went for broke last offseason, but in doing so created a roster that it was difficult to maintain long term. Roseman probably felt like he needed to do that after previously being shoved aside for Chip Kelly. And honestly, it's hard to blame him.

I think Doug Pederson is a pretty good coach. Lord knows he's got bowling ball-size to cojones. But he too might turn out to be an example of the arc were talking about in this thread: early success followed by a savage return to earth and extended mediocrity.

@Mr. Scot I don't know much about him but a recently fired college coach who is all about the offense is Kliff Kingsbury. That's intriguing to me.

College coaches don't get many NFL interviews these days, and the ones who do tend to be currently employed and very successful ones. "Recently fired" isn't likely to get a shot.

Honestly,  I don't think Kingsbury has enough of a resume' yet. His best bet might be to get a spot as a position coach somewhere in the league and start working his way up.

My other thought on Twitter was to totally reimagine the position and get someone outside of football and hire superlative OC/DC. Make the HC the CEO that he could be and not actually manage much. But that's a crazy risk and would be so unorthodox that it could flame spectacularly. Could the risky money guy do something like that? Maybe. But the guy who likes the Steelers way of things...I seriously doubt it.

I've got a feeling that if we get a new GM, the guy who likes the Steelers way of doing things is going to get somebody from the Steelers. That person will pick the head coach, probably not from the Steelers because I don't really think they have a lot of hot head coaching candidates. But it will likely be somebody from the ranks of NFL assistants.

I just hope whoever they are, they're what we really need, because I'm really tired of being stuck in the middle of the pack.

My ridiculous idea is to do something truly different. Hire an OC/DC with the knowledge that they will completely run all aspects of their units (ST too of course). Then hire a GM who is also technically the head coach. The OC will make all offensive decisions. Go for it on 4th. Go for 2. Etc. Literally just remove the position and technically give it to the GM so there's someone who talks to the media. Reimagine the position by essentially eliminating it.

It's my own little crazy idea that will likely never be done. :)

The Bears have been helped out by their schedule, too. No Saints, Rams (yet), or Chiefs. The best offense the Bears have faced this season is New England, and they hung 38 on them. Scoring is the only 'defense' in 2018.

In defense (no pun intended) of the Bears, the Patriot offense didn't hang 38 on the Bear Defense. The special teams gave up a 95 yd td on a  kick off return to Cordarrelle Patterson in the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter the Pats blocked a punt and returned it for a TD.  The Bear defense held up pretty good in that game.

Take away those two big plays and the Bears would have held New England to 24 points which is pretty solid these days...especially against a team with Tom Brady.
