Who on our defense would work in a 3-4?

I'm not sure why so many people here have a fetish for the 3-4. It's not an inherently better or worse defense but would require us to replace basically everyone in our front seven except Kuechly and maybe Shaq.

The real NFL base is Nickel.

everyone. but whats also weird as fug is that you can have a hybrid defense. you're allowed to go 4-3 and 3-4 and quarter and wide nickel or whatever. just putting the effort and doing something NEW and adapting but the panthers don't adapt as fast as other teams.

the best NFL teams in the future will be able to flow to any formation.

Nobody can understand why you made this thread if you didn't want a 3-4.

because there is a possibility our new owner hires a GM and coach to run a 3-4.

It's a possibility that most other posters on this thread understood.  So "nobody can understand" is wrong.

This is why we can't have nice things.

The reason it's hard to understand is most DCs don't run a 3-4.

Plus we would need at least 3 new starting linebackers.

Obada gone, probably addison, Horton gone, you need tweener 3 techniques and teach them how to play that modified 5 technique.

Haynes is the only guy we have to play 7 technique so we need another starter for the other side plus backups at all those positions.

Not sure Luke would do well at Sam when he's been a Mike his whole life and the keys and fits are different.

Essentially you would have to probably add 12 new guys to the front 7.

That makes zero sense. You run your system to fit your players not the other way around.

Only if we were a terrible team would you completely reinstall a defense.

Tepper came from an organization that has a strong philosophy based on the 3-4 defense.  And there has been a lot of speculation that he will bring a guy from the Steelers in to be his GM.  So it's logical to wonder if that does transpire, would the GM would also bring a coach from them with him from Pittsburg (or even if it's an outside hire)...a guy who may be philosophically oriented toward the 3-4.

This is a very reasonable question.

To answer the question, most of our key defensive players could easily make the switch.  On the D-line Poe would be a fit at the 1, KK at the 5, and Vernon can also play the 5, although we would likely need a better player in place of Butler, and Addison would be a solid pass rusher at OLB (probably a more natural fit anyway).

IMO, Hayne's natural position as at OLB in a 3-4, he was always an odd pick here.  I do believe that Luke would thrive in any defense, including the 3-4, and I think Thompson would be a fine ILB in a 3-4 to partner with Luke inside.

That leaves us with a front seven of:

KK   Poe   Butler                                                                                                                                                       Haynes    Luke    Shaq    Addison

Haynes may not be ready, and may only be depth initially, but if we went this route, a 3-4 pass rusher could be our draft focus, instead of a 4-3 pass rusher.  And Butler would likely need to be upgraded, but he could serve as solid depth for a year.

Nobody that we have that wouldn't fit would be big losses anyway and are easily replaceable.  But guys like Obada and Cox would make good depth and give is flexibility to switch to a more 4-3 look on occasion.  And if we wanted to re-sign him, Love would be an ideal nose in a 3-4.

Bottom line is we could do if a new coach comes in and wants to go that route, but if not, we can move forward in the 4-3.  Either way, we need to find a solid pass rusher and some additional depth on the DL.
