"NORFOLK, Va. --  Taylor Heinicke threw for a Division I-record 730 yards on Saturday as Old Dominion rallied to beat New Hampshire 64-61 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Heinicke set school records for completions (55), attempts (79), and passing yards (730) as New Hampshire (2-2), an FCS school, dominated the CAA's top-ranked defense throughout the first three quarters, taking a 54-38 lead into the fourth.

Former Houston quarterback David Klingler held the previous D-I record, throwing for 716 yards against Arizona State on Dec. 2, 1990.

The former FCS record was held by Weber State's Jamie Martin, who threw for 624 yards against Idaho State in 1991.

Division I includes both FBS and FCS schools.

Heinicke, though, is no Sam Durley.

Durley, of Division III Eureka (Ill.) College, set the NCAA single-game mark with 736 passing yards in his team's 62-55 come-from-behind win against Knox earlier this year.

How good was Heinicke?

According to ESPN Stats and Information, nine FBS teams (including reclassifiers) had played at least twice entering Saturday and still had not racked up Heinicke's 730 yards: Tulane, Massachusetts, Southern Miss, Temple, Hawaii, Kent State, Navy, Texas State and UAB.

On Saturday, Heinicke threw five touchdown passes, including two to Nick Mayers, and Angus Harperscored on a 2-yard run, capping a 23-0 scoring run for the Monarchs. Mayers hauled in 12 passes for 271 yards.

The Wildcats rallied, tying the game at 61-61 behind a 45-yard pass from Andy Vailas, but Heinicke led the Monarchs on an 11-play, 74-yard drive that ended with Jared Brown's game-winning 25-yard field goal.

Old Dominion (3-0) has outscored opponents 132-24 in the second half this season.

Heinicke, a sophomore from Atlanta, has thrown for 1,921 and 19 touchdowns for Old Dominion (4-0).

Vailas led New Hampshire with five passing touchdowns.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report."

The Charlotte Observer's Joe Person confirmed Taylor Heinicke will start the Panthers' final two games at quarterback with Cam Newton (shoulder) done for the year.

The Panthers have dropped six straight to tumble to 6-8 and are essentially out of the playoff mix barring a complete miracle. Newton isn't healthy and hasn't been for weeks. Heinicke has never started an NFL game but will now. He's 3-of-5 passing for 56 yards in his career. Heinicke is a small-ish 6'1/210 product of Old Dominion where he reset the record books. He tested extremely well athletically in 2015 coming out of college with a 4.60/4.63 forty and explosive 10-foot-3 broad jump. Heinicke gets a terrible Falcons defense at home in Week 16 and a road date in the Superdome for Week 17 against a Saints team that could be resting starters by then. Heinicke is the stone minimum $6,000 on FanDuel this week.

It was pretty cool at the time because we were just a FCS school at the time and it made national news. We ran an air raid at ODU and we didn't have anything at RB that year. The guy's a beast at leading his receivers open and has a great vision of the field.

    • Lil Stanky 100% in the dot tonight... And our 2nd line has been our best offensive line this season. Maybe our 2C really was on the roster this whole time...?
    • That’s a grade I kind of expected tbh. I’m not a huge fan of NS, but he’s not as bad as what the huddle says he is minus the horrible game he had vs the Rams. I’ve always thought he’s often used as a scapegoat. The improved pass rush should hide his deficiencies a little bit better if he’s the game one starter. FS might have to be a position we punt on this year unless Thieneman falls to us at 19. The reality is, you're going to have a few average players in certain spots for a team with as many holes we had before free agency started. You can’t sign everyone.
    • I am by no means trying to say he's a world beater. I'm saying it's trending in the right direction. Especially when measured against himself.i think the team feel the same way or else they wouldn't have picked up his option. Plus I think there is a new idea in the NFL about these young QBs. Teams give up to soon. Browns gave up to soon on baker same with the jets on Geno and darnold. Maybe they are who you thought they were in the draft process and they need more time to develop than you originally planned. Either way. I do think he is as capable as darnold is as far as you can win a championship with him. And something he does have that darnold doesn't is he is clutch.  If I need one more drive and 2 mins to go I'm betting on Bryce and I am far from a homer, just going off his game winning drives. He has that dog in him on the last drive.
