What are the signs right in front of us.  Well, most of us are chasing  OTs and DEs down rabbit holes, but there are other positions where we have needs. Instead of paying premium for what you need, reap the rewards of the market's bargains. I tell my wife, "Don't go to  the market, let the market come to you."  She tells me, "Shut up, idiot."  Nevertheless,  Free Agency and Food Lion may not be as related as I thought.  First of all,  the talent at DT stands out right now.  As you know, they get cheaper  in week 2 of free agency--I include players for the 4-3, 3-4 and hybrid--(Walter Football, fwiw --I eliminate old guys and those with injury concerns. )-

Darius Philon, DT, Chargers. Age: 25.
Darius Philon, a former sixth-round pick, has developed into a solid starter. He stuffed the run very well last year and also notched four sacks. He's only 25, so he should continue to improve. 

David Irving, DT, Cowboys. Age: 26. David Irving was dominant down the stretch in 2016, and he proved that wasn't a fluke the year after. He was limited to just eight games because of a concussion and a suspension, but he was terrific in those eight contests, registering seven sacks (in 8 games) Irving barely played in 2018 because of injury. However, he's just 26 in August.
 
Timmy Jernigan, DT, Eagles. Age: 26.
The Eagles will not pick up Timmy Jernigan's $11 million option, making him a free agent this offseason. Jernigan barely played last year because of injuries, but should be able to bounce back in 2019, given his age. Jernigan is a stout run defender who can generate some pressure on the quarterback.
 
CHEAPER
Bennie Logan, NT, Titans. Age: 29.  (even if  we go 3-4, I  am  guessing Poe is not the NT we need)
Curiously, Bennie Logan was seldom used in Tennessee. He has played very well in the past, particularly as a run plugger, but he played just a dozen snaps or so per week for the Titans. Perhaps he'll be used more on another team next year
(I see the Panthers grabbing a player like this--younger than Love, can challenge Poe.)
 
Dominique Easley, DT, Rams. Age: 27.
Dominique Easley has been miscast in the Rams' 3-4 defense. He's a 4-3 three-technique defensive tackle, and he could perform in that role elsewhere. Of course, he'd have to stay healthy, which is something he hasn't been able to do throughout his career.  (Of course, this would depend on  us staying in the 4-3)
 
Rodney Gunter, DE/DT, Cardinals. Age: 27.
Rodney Gunter is a solid run defender who can get to the quarterback on occasion. He can play in both the 4-3 and 3-4
 
Zach Kerr, NT, Broncos. Age: 29. Zach Kerr is a monstrous, 335-pound run-stuffer, but he offers nothing as far as the pass rush is concerned.

 

Deep thought:  What if Butler flourishes in the new defensive front?  Discuss amongst yourselves.

Good post but David Irving won’t be an option, he just quit from the NFL so he could smoke more weed, and did it on a livestream while smoking a blunt.

My preference is that we sign the guy from Miami and Dalton Mack to get good guys for both interior positions. Looks like we could get them with the late third and early fourth picks. That gives us a run stuffer and 3 tech. 

Then butler is gone and we have a replacement for Kyle love.

Cross Kerr off that list, he re-signed tih Denver today. I really think we're going to eventually bring back Kyle Love on a 1-year deal.

Poe was not half as bad as people want him to be. KK on the other hand was down right terrible for his pay grade. Dave's draft picks keep under performing in the long term.

That  is what I think as well--letting him see if he can get a better deal, but will offer him a deal near the vet min.  I might try to get him on a 2-year deal-he has improved every year.

      Yep - honestly though, I thought his coverage was as good as you could possibly do on a man coverage crossing route with Dak having all day to throw. Dak made a perfect throw and if it wasn't in front of Pickens, it could have easily been picked off. Seemed like we ran more man than I have seen our defense run so far this year. Defense also did a great job of playing their gap/zone responsibilities (even if Dak did pick apart our zone a good chunk of the game) - that screen play on the last drive could easily have gone for a touchdown if Moehrig didn't play his zone and make a great tackle. Biggest complaint about Evero was not blitzing a few more times (especially when Dallas was in the red zone). The few times we did it, Dak didn't look comfortable.

      There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.

      People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
