The more I look at this there are a lot of busts in this first round.  Always are but lots of suspect guys with big questions.  Just take Jonah.  He bleeds football and has started at the highest competition level since his frosh year at one of the best programs around,  enough for me.

So did all the other Bama OL who have been drafted in the last 20 years. All with disappointing results.

Key is I think Jonah and Taylor Moton have really good position flexibility to so we could try a variety of arrangements until the best fit at LT is found (who really knows if its Moton or J.Williams?). 

Drafting a pass rusher would be nice, I dont think one dude this year is going to solve our dline problem. It notoriously takes most pass rushers multiple seasons to catch on anyway. Feel like its more of a developmental pick instead of getting a plug and play oline to help us immediately. 

Totally agree with what you said about Jonah Williams I would be totally excited to draft him. But, if he is gone we need to draft a pass rusher as you said it can take years for one to catch on.  We can’t wait on our line, we can’t delay the fact we need to get younger and waiting yet another year to draft a D-lineman; that most likely needs to develop is just creating an even bigger problem. Luckily, I think drafting a stud edge in the first is likely, Burns and Gary have a real chance to be at 16. Taking a safety in the second should definitely happen, the crop of second round safety’s that fit our FS hole is amazing. I think a developmental O-lineman in the third like Tytus Howard would be a great choice. Also, I would love a speedy hard ass hitting nickle corner. Or potentially sliding Donte to nickle and drafting an outside corner to potentially be cb 2 or maybe replace bradberry. Lastly, a wr in the fourth like a miles boykin or Emanuel Hall would be perfect. Both could likely fall due and each have insane athleticism and could both compete for wr-3 year one.

And BTW...it is amazingly short sighted to compare players from  “a school” regardless of talent,  current coaches...

Isn’t that the same as  Tennessee QBs bust all the time...until Peyton Manning comes along.  Makes you look unintelligent.

My order would be Burns, Jonah, Sweat, Gary, Ford, Ferrell in that order. I would prefer an EDGE rusher in the first because I still feel like there will be some good offensive tackles in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. If we had to get an EDGE in the 2nd I feel like we would have to go with Christian Miller, Polite or Ferguson in the 2nd and I feel like that would be reaching and I am not too interested in Ferguson. Most likely BPA in the second will be one of the safeties so we will probably miss out on an impactful Edge player if we don't pick one in the first. Just a thought.

Over 20 years? That’s short-sighted? And I’ve seen every bit of it up close. And it’s all of them! Not which ones. 

Let’s go from Chris Samuels in 1999. Last good one.

That’s all the top 100 OL from the last 20 years. Except for Ryan Kelly. Who has a chance to break it. But going into his 4th year, he needs to be around a top 5 C to justify that high of a pick. Which is possible with the way he played last year.. 

    How “short-sighted” is it to want a player just because he played at a particular school. Goes both ways. And I’ll play the odds like these every time.

Which team was glad they drafted them? Simple question. Who are the “lots” that played pretty well? Make some sort of case.  Not a ridiculous exaggeration. Sorry if you didn’t know when you were propping players up because they played there.

I don’t think most see Ford as an LT.  I see him has a LG this year and a possible replacement for Williams at RT.  He provides a lot flexibility on the line moving forward.

i think 16 is too high for a G but if you’re able to trade back he’d be a solid value.

I really like the idea of Sweat or Burns. I've been watching some film on how the Panthers used that hybrid scheme and I think those guys can add a lot of value to the rotation. Ron has used combinations like:

- Peppers and Mario at DE, KK at nose, TD at stand up edge

- KK and Horton at DE, Poe at NT, Mario and Cox at edge

- Butler and Horton at DE, Love at NT, Haynes and Mario at edge

- Peppers at NT, Haynes and Mario at DE, Shaq at edge

 

The list goes on. Think of how many more ways he can use the hybrid defense with a chess piece like Burns or Sweat? Here's the video.
