A.

Greg Olsen

Torrey Smith

Bruce Irvin

B.

Greg Olsen

Bruce Irvin

Gerald McCoy

This seems a very likely answer. Didn't think of Bruce irvin. I had Torrey Smith, Olsen and Cam but I like your answer better. In terms of games played in I guess ST players are a good shout. Obviously veterans. Maybe Kyle Love?

So why did I pick this quesion.  Is there any significance to this data?

As I worked on compiling a detailed spreadsheet about the  Panthers roster yesterday, I noticied that a lot of key players (starters / important role players) are coming back from injury. Cam, Greg, Paradis, D Williams, T Smith, Cockrell, Shaq, Trai Turner, Gano, Norris.

That seemed a high number of injuries to me though obviously some players (Cam!) are much more important / irreplacable than others. Still it got me interested in whether Panthers were more or less injury plagued than normal and compared to the league in 2018.

So, I did some research.

VERY SURPRISINGLY (to me) Panthers had a substantially higher number of 16 game starters in 2018 than the rest of the league. Counting offense/defense players  active in 2018, CAR had 10 players start all 16 games in 2018.

CMC, Moton, GVR, R Kalil on offense

Luke, Addison, Bradberry, Jackson, Poe, Adams on defense.

10 players with 16 reg season starts.

  • The league average in 2018 was 7.2 players starting 16 games per team.
  • CAR was tied for 2nd (w/ CHI). Only Rams had more 16 game starters (15!)

Really surprising that CAR was so high up the list, since it seemed an injury bitten season. I guess it matters WHAT positions injuries occur at. When your QB and O line are injured, it's difficult to win....

But I decided to take it a bit further.

Is there any correlation between number of 16 game starters and team success?

Based on 2018 data, it seems there may be.

1285597425_16gamestartersplayoffs-2018.png.0e03eee9a4f6fd320a413646ce584546.png

50% of teams with 8+ 16-game starters made the playoffs, while only 17% of teams with <6 16-game starters did:

Anyway, it's only 1 season of data, and WAY too small a sample size to draw meaningful conclusions, but I thought it interesting to see a possible link between consistency / durability of a team's starters and team success.

Questions? Thoughts? Give me a shout!

I think your data is interesting, although I wouldn't have had us among the worst injury afflicted teams in the league. The Redskins had an horrific season injury wise. We did lose our LT and QB which is a big deal to most teams although questionably damaging in MK's case.

Its hard to draw connections from that amount of data especially teamwide, though i admire your pontification. Its fun to try to join dots. The consistency of Oline is usually the focus of appearance stats for good reason but that doesn't mean that injuries and lineups in other areas of the team should be ignored.

It would be interesting to be able to statistically connect the absence of a player to a drop in unit ranking, but its a job of work and there just seem like too many variables for it to be more than an exercise in trend-spotting.

Then again i presume that's the exact job of the analytics guy that the Panthers hired.

Hmmmm.... Not a lot of response so far.

Would value feedback.

Question too boring? (not the kind of stats / trivia that interest people?)  too easy?  too hard?

Feel free to suggest the kinds of questions that would be of interest.

Probably need easier questions...

I looked it up after I answered. I missed something obvious on Irvin and I missed the obvious hint on the games played.

I missed two players on the first question. I thought it was Shaq on D instead of Jackson and Williams in for Van Roten. This one is even harder! I honestly can't give more than a blind guess. Between the injuries, guys coming from different teams and ST guys I just don't know. One of the things I miss about playing Madden is that I learned all of the stats on players a lot more regularly.

A.  McCoy, JJ and Gano

B. McCoy, Irving and Cam

Thanks KB, great to have some fun in the dead times!

Apologies for the long delay in replying and posting an answer. Been dealing with some major internet disruptions for the past 24 hours in the city where I'm working currently.

The answers to Q2.

Most games: Olsen, Jansen, Gano

Most starts: Olsen, McCoy, Cam

One interesting tidbit is that McCoy and Cam have both played in 123 games. But McCoy has started all 123, whereas due to the Seattle tiegate fiasco in 2016, Cam has 1 less start - only 122.

I have some interesting stats I wanted to post re: how Panthers players compare with ALL active NFL players in terms of games and starts, but my internet connection challenged means that will have to wait..

Ok, here's Question 3:

There are 3 players on the Panthers Current roster who are tied for lead in terms of number of playoff games played. (Playoffs for ANY team, not just with Panthers).

A. Name the 3 players

B. How many playoff games have they played?

C. Who has the most playoff wins?

I reckon Matt Paradis may enter the conversation on this one. I will say Kuechly and Cam as the other 2 and Paradis has the most wins at 7.

Paradis, Bruce Irvin and Dontari Poe are probably all in the discussion with some of the success from previous teams. Hogan possibly too, although I am not sure long he was with NE. Olsen is probably up there. Maybe even the special teams guys like Jansen or Gano.

This question is pretty difficult because it requires us to know a lot about players previous team success prior to being Panthers.

True. But I figure guys like Irvin and Smith and Hogan are well enough known re: what teams they were with that folks have a shot. I mean I imagine most here know Torrey has 2 SB rings (Ravens and Eagles) and they know Hogan comes from Patriots and Irvin was in Seattle.

There will be some easier questions that are more totally Panthers focused in the coming days...  I hope to do about 15 questions, maybe more.

I haven't played fantasy football in a long time, so I don't have the crazy detailed knowledge of which players were on what teams for how long. That is one thing I will give fantasy sports, you are pretty much forced to know a shitload about every other team and their rosters.

Torrey was one that I missed. I forgot he was on that Ravens SB team. I suspect he is pretty high on that list, in that case.

Yeah, I don't play fantasy, but I like learning about the guys on the team, which is one reason why I'm doing this thread. I figure it's a good way to know some interesting things about the players, especially since there's been a fair bit of roster turnover.

I'm going to say Torrey has the most followed by Hogan and then Paradis. I don't think anyone drafted by the Panthers could be in the top 3.

Also, from question 1 - It's very interesting that Van Roten played every single snap. He flies under the radar a lot. Going to be hard to keep him off the field.
