This was a fun experiment.

It's easy to blame Bersin for this. But special teams gaffes have been a recurring theme under Ron Rivera for years. Even as recent as last season with Moore.

I'm sure Ron treating the role of our special teams coaching position like a revolving door for his pals who just need a job has had nothing at all to do with it.

He didn't make the the team because he was Richardson's neighbor.  He made it because he was the fifth or sixth best receiver the coaching staff had to choose from.  Its not like we cut someone who went on to a stellar career with some other team so we could keep Bersin.  The issue was not Bersin or Richardson.  It was that the front office did a poor job drafting and signing talent at the WR position.  Its a problem we have had for 12 or more years, well before Bersin got here.  The last really good receiver we drafted was Steve Smith.  The Jury is still out on Samuel and Moore, but it looks promising.

Probably because Richardson forced them to make a spot for him.   Hard to replace someone like that.    He's not an NFL caliber WR, he never was, that's why he didn't get on any other teams when we finally cut the rope.     I don't blame him at all and anyone would have took that opportunity, it's just the idea of having him around because of Richardson is what people hate.     If people hate him because of the fumble on punt return well THAT is definitely on coaches for thinking he could do that lol.

Sure is a lot of hate for a guy who was our WR4 or WR5. As best I can tell, the only time he screwed up was botching a punt return when he was asked to fill in for our injured returner.

The rest of the time, the guy just came in for four, maybe five plays a game and usually caught a clutch pass for a first down on third and 10 or thereabouts. He played special teams and ran his routes well, had good hands, got along well with Cam and did what the coaches asked of him.

The guy was an NFL caliber player, which sets him above the vast majority of folks who ever strapped on a helmet and tried to play the game. He wasn't Steve Smith, he wasn't OBJ, he wasn't even Ricky Proehl, but he was a professional football player. He probably did get a nod to come to training camp because of his Wofford connection and that JR knew his family. He earned his spot on the team, though, by fighting for it and beating out a lot of other hopefuls that couldn't make it for some reason or another.

There's no reason to dis the guy. He was a Panther, he played when called upon, was a great teammate and took some lumps to make some positive plays. Claiming otherwise is disingenuous and frankly, pointless to being at a level of fetishism to handwring over the bottom ends of the depth chart.

Really,  the guy wore our uniform, played for our team and was always there when we called on him. He deserves better than this crap.

The dude made clutch catches and wasn't afraid to give up the body to do it. If the ball hit his hands it stayed there. Honestly, like so many different players under Shula, I think the guy was under utilized. He wasn't all pro, but he was a possession receiver. He strapped on his helmet and gave it all for the Panthers. That's more than can be said of some guys that did make the team.
