Fifty years ago today, Apollo 11 began its voyage into American history. The Saturn V rocket carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:32 a.m. on July 16, 1969 — and just four days later, man first set foot on the moon. The moon mission was a milestone in human history. But it was also a groundbreaking moment in broadcast television, as CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite brought the frontier of space to living rooms across America. Watch live:

Highly recommend the new CNN Apollo 11 doc, some unearthed 65mm footage in there, seeing 1969 in HD is amazing to me. It’s also a great timeline doc of the flight.

fuged up that the best quality footage we have of the moon landing is the 1969 equivalent of taking a video of family guy moments with an iphone 4 and posting it on youtube bc they erased the original tapes that contained the live video feed from the mission

I got to tour the Kennedy Space Center a few years ago.  Its a really fascinating place.  What those men did with the level of technology they had was truly amazing.

In 2011 family stopped for a visit to KSC before our cruise, and got to go into the VAB where Endeavour was being prepped for its museum trip. Tours of the VAB were suspended at the start of the shuttle program because solid rocket fuel was stored there so it was pretty freaking great to go in there. It's closed off again now I think due to SLS (same solid fuel storage issues)?

The new shuttle exhibit is amazing but nothing tops the Saturn V experience, with Mission Control and the LM show.

My Apollo model signed by Apollo 13 Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise when I was on a channel 42 student discussion program with him in 1970. He even opened a panel on the model to show where the oxygen tank that exploded was. Tried to get a copy of the video 15 years ago but alas, they said they no longer had it.

Lol! I remember that. Aldrin is one of my favorite astronauts in that he is not overly stoic like some of the others.

In 2002 I was visiting IWM Duxford, which is the big Imperial War Museum restoration and flying center near Cambridge UK. My friends and I were there first thing in the morning, almost the only people there, and I went into the American Air wing of the museum ahead of my friends, and there was Buzz and a videographer doing an interview right in front of me as I opened the door. Talk about a freak out moment lol. I decided to be cool and not start snapping pictures like a tourist to my endless regret. There is a picture of me as a second grader with Harrison Schmitt when they came into our local AFB for some dinner, my mom braved some real crowds to get me there for that. I was a little smart ass kid, as a second grader I'd get sent up to the fourth graders class and tell them all about how the moon rocket worked. Should have gotten beaten up more back then really but I was consumed with the space flight stuff.

If it wasn't against the law to punch people in the face who needed punched in the face, it would lessen a lot of our current societal issues. Good for Buzz!

I suppose people have the right to believe any whacky ass bull that they want to.  But when you get up in someone's face and insult their integrity by calling them a liar, then you have to accept the possibility that they may not take it well.  What makes this one great though is that the young idiot got staggered by an 80 year old man.

Yep, believe whatever you want but if you start screaming in someone's face calling them a liar and a fraud you should probably reasonably expect to get punched in the face.
