3-4 will kill us

The 34 is a bit of a problem. You’re taking some of your best players and neutralizing their strengths. McCoy and Short are not natural fits for this. Kuechly is not a natural fit for this.

I’m not saying I hate the idea. I think this becomes more of a situational look. Takes time to build a traditional 34. And there will be growing pains.

What exactly is McCoys strength in a 4-3 that is a liability in a 3-4. The biggest transition is not linemen but linebacker. Are we running a 1 gap or 2 gap 3-4?  That determines the run fits.

It was the preseason and we held the defending champs to 10 points.

I'd be more concerned that the offense only scored 3.

D gave up 22 first downs 37 minute possession. No cause for concern here?

PS: 12 of those 1st downs 20 minutes possession and almost 200 yards in the first half against our projected starters.

Obviously, 3 & outs don't help but .....

Let’s not forget had badly our 4-3 got gashed in running game LY

and LY we had no pressure

thought our secondary was good Thursday

shaq still out of position a lot and saw him got knocked backwards a few times

new scheme...we will figure it out...too many good players on def

That is part of the issue. On a 3-4 more linemen and fullbacks will reach the second level. Linebackers have to be able to shed blockers to get to the runner. Plus instead of trying to get pressure all the time the 3 down linemen need to secure the gap first and then focus on rushing the passer not go full tilt toward the QB. Most sacks in a 3-4 come from the linebackers not the down linemen.

Well it’s also relative to your offense putting drives together.

id have to go back and count again but I think we only had like 3-4 drives that weren’t 3 and outs.

thats how you kill a defense...even if they are great.

You know what, after going back and looking at the stats, I am not nearly as down on our defense.

The Pats had almost twice as many offensive plays as we did.  We had SIX DRIVES that were 3 and out!  That's plain horrific!  You cannot put your defense on the field for twice as many plays - against the defending champs no less - and expect to do well.  Our defense played a terrific bend but don't break game all things considered.

Oh, and Brian Burns is the (*&$@ing TRUTH.  I'm not sure why he isn't starting.

Ron probably wants Burns to "earn" his way up to starting lineup instead of starting him right away. Did the same with Shaq, Butler (ugh), even CMC. He'll be rotating with Mario & Bruce Irving a lot throughout the year.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
