Despite us getting taken to the woodshed yesterday, here's at least one thing to be positive about. CMC continues to absolutely ball vs teams not named Tampa Bay.

Going to start tracking his weekly progress since he's already accumulated over 1000 yards from scrimmage in 7 games. Currently

  • 141 rushing attempts, 735 rushing yards, 5.2 yards per carry, 84 yard longest run, 5 20+ yard rushing plays, 8 Rushing TDs
  • 49 targets, 39 receptions, 343 receiving yards, 8.8 yards per catch, 25 yard longest reception, 3 20+ yard receiving plays,  2 receiving TDs
  • 1078 yards from scrimmage, 10 total touchdowns
  • #4 in the league in rushing yards (#2 among players with 7 games played behind Nick Chub with 738)
  • #2 in the league in yards from scrimmage (#1 among players with 7 games played)
  • #1 in the league in yards per game (154, D.Cook is 2nd with 139.5)
  • #2 in the league in rushing Touchdowns (tied with 8 with Aaron Jones, Dalvin Cook #1 with 9)
  • #2 in the league in rushing yards per game (with 105.0, Nick Chubb #1 with 105.4)
  • One of 7 RBs in the NFL averaging over 5 yards per carry
  • Needs 265 more rushing yards for 1000
  • Needs 657 more receiving yards for 1000

Updated Career Stats through 2.5 seasons (39 games):

  • 477 rushing attempts, 2268 rushing yards, 4.8 YPC, 17 rushing touchdowns, longest run : 84 yard TD (2019)
  • 226 receptions, 1861 receiving yards, 8.2 YPC, 13 receiving touchdowns, longest reception : 38 yards (2018)
  • 4129 yards from scrimmage, 30 total touchdowns
    • For Reference :
      • Emmit Smith had 5034 yfs, 43 total TDs through his first 3 seasons.
      • Marshall Faulk had 4372 yfs, 33 total TDs

Wow...  Turns out that was a great pick!

pretty much. If you take away nothing else from all that data, pay attention to the last line. He's going blow for blow with Emmit Smith, Walter Payton, and especially similar to Marshall Faulk in terms of total yards and total TDs he's getting.

He’s not going for 1k/1k.

He’s going for 2k/1k.

Thats re-gawd-damn-diculous.  I hope he breaks the record book in half.

Hes on pace for about 1600 rushing / 700 receiving / 23 TDs

He could get much more or much less than that though, depending on how he performs in the 2nd half of the season.

The main stat is he's been average 154 yards from scrimmage per game, which is pretty solid number by now with 7 games played. That would translate to 2464 yfs on the season, which would be 2nd all time in yfs for 1 season (Chris Johnson 2009 holds the record with 2509) (Marshall Faulk 1999 currently number 2 with 2429)

Its this single season yfs record that CMC should really be gunning for IMO. He's basically on the same pace is Faulk was in his 1999 greatest show on turf season which was :

  • Faulk : (16 games) 1381 rushing yards, 1048 receiving yards, 7 rush TD, 5 receiving TD
  • McCaffrey : (7 games) 735 rushing yards,  343 receiving yards, 8 rush TD, 2 receiving TD

The fact is he is actively trying to break the record and has an OC perfectly willing to let him have the ball.

It up to the defenses to stop him now.  He’s on a mission.

Too bad our OL screwed up his 40 yard run down to the goal line. We actually would have been down only 27-20 in the 3rd. Still had no answer to the running game so we wouldn’t have won but we wasted a really good run because we couldn’t play smart or well.

Ron shouldve taken him out early in the 4th. Playing him needlessly when the game was way out of contention is a big no-no IMO.

These stats are great CMC is on a historic pace by all accounts. His stats are pretty simular to Marshal Faulk's at this point in both their careers.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he spent his first 5 or 6 years with us and went to Denver or something for the last half of his career. Its incredibly rare for running backs to stay with one team their entire career unless they end it early themselves (ex. Barry Sanders) or if it ends early due to injury (ex. Gayle Sayers, Earl Campbell, Bo Jackson).

    • Why don't we just say they can shove the late round draft picks up their ass? If they want a player they will be starting at WR in Week 1, I want a MLB in return that we can start Week 1. Starter for a Starter Not Starter for a draft pick we'll be debating whether or not they should make the final 53 man roster in 2026.
    • Why?   No. This isn't a situation of a player we want to trade because we have no use for them.  He's our starting slot WR, our leader of the young WR room, Bryce's safety option the last 2 years who he has good chemistry with. If the Vikings didn't run into WR trouble, we'd never have been even considering trading him, so why in the world should we give him up for fair market value in a vacuum for Thielen and disregard what losing him off our roster will do for us this year? A 5th round pick in 2026 is a negligible draft pick, especially with this season being so make or break for Bryce and Canales.
    • The Vikings acquiring all these late round picks has me feeling like we're about to see another CMC situation play out here. Trade a player we really like for the equivalent of what we want for them on the draft pick chart, but because of a bunch of late round picks instead of the one pick value we actually want. Which will do the same thing in the end, nothing, because 6th and 7th round picks rarely work out to begin with, or we're just going to use them to move up 10 picks in the 3rd or 4th round to take another DJ Johnson
