Defending Rivera

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

It was reported that team owner David Tepper was "livid" after the San Francisco game. This game wasn't the kind of humiliating blowout that game was, but the defense in this game was pretty terrible as well.

It's possible Rivera might have been able to survive one performance like that, but two horrible defensive showings within a few weeks of each other? I've got a feeling that proverbial seat is getting mighty warm.

Still, I know there are people who are fans. I've said elsewhere that I'm a fan of Rivera the person. Rivera the coach? Not so much.

But if you feel differently, I'll give you the chance to speak your mind here.

Defend keeping Rivera, if you can.

So the big problem I see... Our DEs are 250lbs and strictly rushers.  They should be 3-4 LBs but we do not have enough DTs for 3-4 so we are playing 4-3 with undersized DEs so we get pushed around big time upfront.  Once we lost KK, we were f’ed.

There is a lot of truth to this. We need to play some base 3-4 packages and get those OLB/DE back at the second level. Having 5 people on the line makes it pretty easy to wash them out on any sweep. The fact that I keep seeing it over and over, really worries me. The coach’s are not making adjustments, or can not see the obvious.

Defense is going into all our rebuild mode next year.  Poe, McCoy, Butler ant likely KK are all gone.  Shaq will be resigned but I think Bradberry is gone.  We’ll be drafting heavy on D and we will fully switch to 3-4.  We have 3-4 LBs but 4-3 DL.  We get pressure but cannot stop the run.  Butler, McCoy ant Love are all 4-3 guys.  Poe has always struggled in 4-3 and he’s been asked to play in 4-3.

3-4 has always sucked vs the run and I knew before the draft that Burns and the like would be liabilities vs the run.

It's pick your poison right now and we don't have enough pieces for either.

I also thought 3-4 would hurt Luke.

Bingo.  Shaq is also not a good fit for 3-4... he’s like 230lbs... he gets easily blocked by TEs on the run.

Let’s start with... Ron and Marty saw in Kyle what most others did not.

furhermore... the ownership livid after the sf loss tidbit is troublesome.  If he’s gonna blow up every time his team runs into a buzz saw then I dunno what to say.  I almost don’t believe it.  Tepper seems like a big picture kinda guy.

Big picture is our Offense literally remains the same while we have around $80M in cap next year and draft to rebuild our D.

Couple of different sources reported it.

I think the Steelers loss from last year probably made that one feel a lot worse. And while this loss wasn't as big a blowout, it was still a pretty embarrassing defensive performance.

As far as Tepper, he definitely strikes me as a guy that could get scary mad. The thought of Jerry Richardson throwing a temper tantrum never really struck me as all that frightening. Tepper? Oh yeah.

I know it was reported and I can see it in Tepper.  But I don’t think it’s productive for an owner to freak out week to week in the nfl.

the nfl is a business but running an nfl team from a football stand point is not like running a typical business.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
