In Depth Analysis of the Panthers Roster

Bronn

Recommended Posts

QB
Kyle Allen  - Glorified backup, currently unfit to be a starter
Will Grier - okay beard, okay sideline skills

RB
CMC - "OMG guys he is totally the greatest RB of ALL TIME. OF ALL TIME"

FB
Alex Armah - good at catching people that break into his car, plays an obsolete position in the NFL

WR
DJ Moore - He's okay. I still say he's too soft, but he is improving
Curtis Samuel - Decent body catches when he's open, but for the love of all things please don't touch him or expect him to not run out of bounds to avoid contact. SOFT
Jairus Byrd - Good third down WR on a bad team

TE
Greg Olsen - old, slow, injured. Probably done as a Panther this season.
Chris Manhertz - glorified extra blocker that even does that sub-par
Ian Thomas - on any other team, the future at the TE position

OL
Taylor Moton - probably our best OL right now
Dennis Daley - probably our second best OL right now
Greg Little - his head hurts
Daryl Williams - Trash. Absolute trash. $6M worth of trash.
Trai Turner - Really really underwhelming this year. Almost as bad as Daryl Williams IMHO.
Matt Paradis - The healthier of the Kalil redheaded step brothers. And he's pretty overpaid, too.
Tyler Larsen, Brad Lundblade, and Garret McGhin - JAGs and warm bodies, at this point.

DL
Gerald McCoy -  our best DL right now, but getting worn down fast
Kyle Love - our second best DL right now
Vernon Butler - never thought I'd say this, but he's playing pretty hard and doing enough good to outweigh the bad
Efe Obada - the same lunchpail guy he's always been, but playing out of position due to injuries
Woodrow Hamilton - JAG with a decently cool name
Stacy McGee - I have literally no idea who this is
Wes Horton - I thought it was a good signing, but I can't say I've seen him other than on the sidelines last week

LB
Luke Kuechly - GOAT MLB but he looks lost/slow at times this year
Shaq Thompson - Has shown flashes, but is inconsistent and just as lost as everyone on defense at times
Mario Addison - Sacks are good, but he's overpaid and inconsistent
Brian Burns - Good when he can see the field, but he seems to get hurt a lot
Bruce Irvin - Veteran presence, but needs to be more situational than we've been using him
Marquis Haynes, Christian Miller - Both have shown flashes, but either can't see the field or get healthy
Jermaine Carter - generational talent at recovering onside kicks
Andre Smith, Jordan Kunaszyk - can't really see the field

DB
James Bradberry - our best DB, which isn't saying much
Eric Reid - National hero and very good Safety, especially in the box
Donte Jackson - Fast. But all talk, no action. He never came down from that great pick earlier in the season.
Ross Cockrell - probably our 2nd best CB, if you aren't playing favorites. I'd like to see him at FS some, actually.
Tre Boston - Hard hitting. Not so great in coverage.
Javien Elliot - I had higher hopes for him, but he isn't that special.
Corn Elder and Cole Luke - JAG warm bodies

ST/JAGs/Why do these guys have a job?
Reggie Bonnafon & Mike Davis - nah, let's force it to CMC all the time
Donte Moncreif - lol who?
Brandon Zylstra - lol who again?
DeAndrew White - Hard headed
Colin Jones - Coach Rivera's son
JJ Jansen - he has one job. ONE JOB.
Joey Slye - I thought he looked pretty cool for a kicker until I realized he was going bald
Mike Palardy - Team MVP most weeks

IR
Cam Newton - GOAT Panthers QB. Should finish his career here under better coaching/line.
Dontari Poe - Underachieving against the run. Needs to take a pay cut or hit the road under a new regime.
Jordan Scarlett - We hardly knew ye.
Kawann Short - I'd want to quit and go to IR too, as much as we were getting run over. Needs to restructure his contract.
GVR - Thanks for making way for Daryl Williams. Seriously, thanks.
Everyone else - I don't care, tbqh.

Tre Boston has actually been the only good player on this defense in my opinion.

Eric Reid flashes, but is inconsistent.

Who would have thought our two best defensive players this year would be safeties?  SMFH...

Reid is our worst guy in coverage. He's great in the box but just horrifying in coverage. We aren't good enough to disguise how bad he is at that specific thing, unfortunately.

He really is just a speedy linebacker, but that's the SS job in many defenses.  He's not even worth mentioning in coverage.

Yeah but those guys aren't really as useful in the modern NFL. Sort of like Ron's coaching, Reid is a throwback guy. The league is heavily passing now, so being bad in coverage is a big liability.

If we were just simply better as a defense, we could disguise that and be okay but that just simply isn't the case.

If you really want to break it down further, and I think that someone should, we need to look at the cap, the players that we have signed long term, and what group we need to focus on moving forward.

I think that if someone that is better at that stuff than I will tackle it, many of you are going to be surprised how close to a tear down we really are.

Reid has a place on a football team, of that there is no doubt.  However, he can't be asked to play all three downs, and all packages, and you just simply can't pay him like we did.

Oh the amount of expiring contracts and decisions on younger players coming this offseason and next are absurd. Pretty much every player on the roster is going to be coming up on a new deal.

This is a critical offseason to see where the owner sees us as a franchise. If he can get a GM and HC that can steady the ship, I think that is possible. But if we decide to nuke the whole thing and begin true rebuilding? Boy.......it could get ugly really fast. I mean Bengals ugly and not for a season or two, for a while.

Agreed.  Kuechly is better at covering the deep ball than Reid.

Yeah, I think that is the thing. It ended up being poor value in hindsight but somewhat less for things he did. We have an extremely porous defense and it has impacted our secondary quite a bit. It's hard to see his value with those factors.

But, it's possible with a rebuilt defense or new coaching he can be an effective player for us. Time will tell.

Oh this was mostly in jest. I'll do a serious analysis of the Panthers roster, and what the plan should be going into the 2020 offseason like I normally do.

Maybe. If I don't get too burnt out on the Panthers and football in general. It isn't looking to good at this point. I'm already not going to watch again until Ron and Norv are canned.

    • He is by no means perfect, to me it looks like he is very poor att what he is poor at and very good at what is is good at. I take that over everything good but nothing above good.  Fit is a question, Young is not at toss it up gunslinger. It is easy to imagine a 1000+ season with a guy like (prime) Wilson or Jake.

    • Bring in the King! Some of yall aren't gonna want to hear this, but this is 4 bad games in a row for Freddie. Even worse, going back to game 1 vs the Isles, he has gotten progressively worse each and every game. It's almost like taking a guy who hadn't played 2 games in a row in over a full calender year and making him play 7 straight might not have been the best decision... I'm not saying throw Freddie in the trash. Give the rook game 2 in NY. If he looks good and we steal one in their house, let Pyotr have game 3 back home while the Great Dane freshens up and gets his mind right for games 4 and 5 when this really becomes a series. In your hearts you know it's true, G Our game is flat like 2D The skaters know it too, see It's time for some Kucci!
