The QB talk is really a moot point at this moment.

To give perhaps the most relevant answer to the question, the soap opera of As the Stomach Turns starring Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels.

Officially, Cutler asked to be traded and was given his wish.  That was after Shanahan was fired, McDaniels was hired, and the report/rumor surfaced that the Broncos were entertaining trade offers.  Connect those dots as you will.

You can argue Cutler was not Cam, but at the time in Denver he was the starting QB and they were expecting/hoping for great things.  And Cam has not been Cam, and nobody knows for sure whether he ever will be again.

And they replaced Cutler with......<drum roll, please> Kyle Orton.  Great move, right there.

Touche.

Completely forgot about that fiasco. Yes, that is a recent example. But I think we can all agree that if McD could go back he wouldn't have tried to trade Cutle0r in the first place. In other words, "He played himself."

Right and when Dan Quinn is fired this year, do you think the next HC will be looking for Ryan's replacement? Was Reich looking for Luck's replacement when he came in? Cam has missed one season due to injury. Granted he played hurt a number of games last season, but he only missed 2 games due to injury. And let's please stop saying Cam hasn't done anything since 2015. He has been a very good QB with a very bad/mediocre offensive supporting cast for most of his tenure. How could anyone not be excited to see him come back with the skilled players the team has now, is beyond me. He showed just last season that he could be an effective pocket passing QB with a competent OC - at least until JJ's little brother knocked his friggin shoulder out of alignment. But that could happen to any player, particularly one playing behind a such a sham of an offensive line.

Long term deal right now - no way, I agree. I'd probably want to at least see him running around first. But after that, I'm all in.

Agree also to fixing the OL and DL. That's the crux of this team right now. But we're talking 2 players on the OL, and 2 players on the DL, and the whole complexion of the team changes. Not world beaters, but competent NFL-level players. Right now we're missing that in a few positions and teams are targetting/abusing them every game.

Ryan isn't a good example. Atlanta has no choice but to go with Matt Ryan. Here is what it would cost in dead money to cut him:

2020 - $68.9 mil

2021 - $35.3 mil

2022 - $16.8 mil

2023 - $3.7 mil

Atlanta's cap situation is part of what keeps that potential opening from being all that attractive.  They have issues for the next couple of years.  It starts easing off a little after next season, but it is 2022 or so before it really clears up.  If you are bringing in somebody new to look at even retooling, it is tight.

On the positive side, it's really just the defensive side of the ball that needs work. That offensive should be potent for the next 2-3 years at least.

In our situation, we really need a lot of work on both sides of the ball, which is very unfortunate.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
