Allen is our back up QB

Most teams don't have a great backup QB. They want a guy that can be decent enough to do the job untill their #1 gets healthy. With some more time, maybe Allen can be that guy.

Other option is to sign an older vet at a bargain price to fill in. Pick your poison.

I want to see Allen start behind a competent o line and be trained by competent coaching.  He has a couple of issues to be fixed, like literally 2 bad throws a game, but otherwise looking good.

Ummmm... yeah Allen has thrown too many bad balls and has a fundamental issue with fumbling to think he can become a legitimate starter in my opinion.

But I don't want to bury him either. He was put into a tough spot. He has made some really good throws in spite of incredibly bad offensive line play.

All I think is that he is a cheap young QB who has shown enough to at least compete for a roster spot next year

Yeah and we don’t have one, that’s why we’ve lost 8 straight games.

If they had a NFL quality Oline  and a defense that could stop a guy with one leg..we wouldn't have lost 8 straight games.

All this talk will be mute if they don't find an Oline. Can't just draft a first round QB with this shitty line and expect any kind of results. Cam would get killed again and any rookie would be on IR along with Cam before the 2020 season would be over.

It's hard to overstate how massive a failure both lines were this season. Certainly injuries played a part, but our highest priced defensive line got blown off the ball again and again.

After neglecting the offensive line for years, the Panthers have made a decent investment in recent years. Moton, Turner, and Little were high draft picks. Paradis was supposed to be an upgrade over late-career Kalil. Van Roten was supposed to be the weak link, and yet he was arguably the most consistent before his injury.

My concern with the offensive line is that with all the resources we need to rebuild and restock the defensive line with all the pending free agents, I don't know how much is going to be left for the offensive line.

I don't know how the offensive line can become good again next year without some of these guys simply playing better. It sucks and is not a good situation to be in going into next year

Just because the kid isn't a franchise QB doesn't mean he isn't worth a roster spot as a backup QB.

Between Allen and Grier, I would keep Allen as the backup QB. The BACKUP QB

Key word being BACKUP

In a perfect situation he would never see the field, but we know that if the team around him is alright than he can game manage the team to a victory for a game or two.

Backup QBs should not be relied on for nearly a full year's worth of starts.

This is why I am against drafting a QB in rounds 1-3 (barring somebody dropping), because I think we absolutely have too many holes in the trenches and we should have better options in those rounds than reaching for a QB.

You don’t get that benefit when you are undrafted. That’s just the way it works. Plenty of more talented options out there who can do the exact same thing.

For a lot more money to sign for the same results.

Allen is Matt Moore 2.0. He is going to be in the NFL for a very long time. He will probably start games for at least 2-3 other teams during his career. He’s not “the guy” in Carolina but he can be a good backup, unless he wants a shot at starting somewhere.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
