Decent read/articles on potential new head coach Josh McDaniels

Interesting reads on one of four targets for Head coach.

From The Athletic Joseph Person and Jourdan Rodrigue:

Happy Josh Mcdaniels GIF by New England Patriots

Josh McDaniels

Age: 43

Previous positions: Personnel assistant, New England (2001-02), defensive assistant, New England (2003), QBs coach, New England  (2004-05), offensive coordinator/QBs coach, New England (2006-08), head coach, Denver (2009-10), offensive coordinator, St. Louis (2011), offensive coordinator/QBs coach, New England (2012-present).

Appeal to Panthers: McDaniels is held in high regard in league circles, despite his about-face after accepting the Colts’ head-coaching job two years ago. Before firing Rivera, Tepper talked a lot about sustained success, and it’s hard to argue with the track record in New England. Though Bill Belichick’s coaching tree hasn’t produced as many successes as Andy Reid’s, it hasn’t stopped other NFL teams from trying to mimic the Patriots’ model by hiring the likes of Eric Mangini, Jim Schwartz, Bill O’Brien and Matt Patricia. McDaniels was only 33 when he got the Broncos’ job, and he was just 34 when he was fired after going 11-17 after nearly two seasons. Clearly, NFL decision-makers believe he’s ready for another shot: The Browns and Giants also are scheduled to interview him.

Notable: The Panthers also have a front office position available. And McDaniels has two former college teammates who work in the Patriots’ front office — Nick Caserio and Dave Ziegler — leading to speculation that one of them could join McDaniels in Charlotte if he’s hired.

What they’re saying:

Veteran personnel executive: “I think he’s gonna be the most impressive (in his interview), but he’s also gonna be the most guarded. I think that he knows if Belichick ever left that he would be probably pretty close to being in line to take that job. Not that Belichick’s leaving. But he has a bird in hand in New England. So he has a little bit of leverage to be picky and not to jump at any and all opportunities.”

(Any concern from around the league about McDaniels, after backing out of Indianapolis job in 2018?)

Veteran personnel official: “I think everybody has their own ideas and speculation. But unless you were one of the handful of people that were involved with it, there’s probably stuff you don’t know. But when something like that happens with anybody, that’s obviouslysomething you’ve got to be prepared, if you’re that person, to state what was behind it and be open about it.”

(On McDaniel’s offensive style and the Patriots’ success)

Veteran personnel executive: “The thing McDaniels does better than anybody that he doesn’t get enough credit for — yes, he has Tom Brady — but he’s willing and able and understands that he needs to play to the strengths of what they have on offense. That’s the difference between the New England style and basically every other style. The Andy Reid tree is gonna come in and, by and large, they’re gonna run their system. Whether it’s Matt Nagy, Eric Bieniemy, (Doug) Pederson, Frank Reich — Frank’s a little different because he’s got a little bit more influence from other people and other systems.

“But by and large it’s a system and the pieces fit in the system, whereas McDaniels is gonna come in and say: ‘OK, what do we have? OK, we have Christian McCaffrey. Well, he can be James White. He can be a little bit of (Julian) Edelman and we’ll fit the pieces around this and then we’ll fit the pieces around these receivers.’ And he’s gonna make it work. I think that’s the one advantage McDaniels has that I’ve always appreciated.”

General manager: “Josh is super successful. You’re probably not going to find a guy with his track record of success. And a lot of times, guys only get one shot at being a head coach. I know enough that Josh believes he learned a lot of valuable lessons with his experience in Denver. And that (Patriots) offense has been very good. I would say this: The Patriot people overall have not been that successful. But I feel like this guy would be different now that he’s been out there … Even though you learn all of these things from Bill and they worked (in New England), you still have to be yourself a little bit. That would be my hunch with him, is that this time he’s going to be himself. I know for a fact that he tried to be Belichick when he went to Denver. When you don’t have Tom Brady, and you don’t have Belichick’s success, it doesn’t really translate.”

For what it's worth, superstar offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia said he wouldn't have come out of retirement if anyone other than McDaniels had been the offensive coordinator at the time.

I’m all for the hire. I know he didn’t work out on Denver, but that was a loooong time ago and looking at what he is responsible for in NE and how much freedom Bill B has given him, along with personal one on one mentorship, I would be excited to see what he could do for our team. I like that he is never settled in a system and that he builds a winning offense around who he has.

Reminds me...

Definitely not something I would hold my breath on happening, but if McDaniels were hired, I wouldn't mind it at all if he could somehow bring Dante Scarnecchia with him.

He's 72, so obviously not a long-term solution. But if he could train a successor, that might work out just fine.

Spotlight on Josh McDaniels/Bill Belichick relationship:

Nearly two decades later, Belichick essentially gives McDaniels free rein to craft the Patriots’ offensive scheme as he sees fit.

“I give him a little bit of input, but 90 to 95 percent is his plan, his vision,” Belichick says. “Rarely do we see things that differently. But sometimes there will be things that I suggest. Sometimes he’ll say, ‘I think that would be great,’ and sometimes he’ll say, ‘I don’t really think this is the right time for us to do that. Here’s the reason why.’ And he’s usually right.”

One line in Belichick’s speech during the Patriots’ latest Super Bowl ring ceremony, which opens the film, succinctly sums up the admiration he has toward McDaniels.

“Josh,” Belichick says, “I’m glad you didn’t go to Indianapolis. Let’s start with that.”

Doubt this would happen due to his age, but how was that Redskins coach that got let go? Isn't he known as being a great line coach?

You do have to kind of wonder what McDaniels and Belichick's relationship will be if he leaves and takes some people with him.

It's been said that Belichick is okay with people advancing their careers in other locations, as long as they don't take anybody with them.

Bill Callahan? He's very good.

I just don't know if he has any connection to McDaniels (haven't looked).

Idk the articles I read all said they are extremely close and you would have to think at this point Bill takes in stride that his staff will be plucked, as he has adjusted throughout his career so many times. He has prob been expecting Josh to leave for a few years now which is why he has opened up the vault of knowledge to him, because he knows he will be a HC again soon and nothing will stop that.
