Ego and how the team screwed up the Cam situation

Cam is under contract. Let him earn his job in training camp. If he can beat out Teddy so be it. He's healthy. Injury to injury both guys are now "damaged goods". See who is better. No emotion.

Oops. That would be the rational thing to do to actually BE smart. My bad.

Teddy has a tradable contract.

All valid gripes but unfortunately whenever a new regime comes in for a NFL team, if a QB isn't at a stable point (age, injury, performance, etc) then the new regime will be looking to replace people.  Cam was evaluated by the new regime and they gave a thumbs up.  They snakily teased their optimism and desire to keep him as a tactic to build trade value which not only failed (since they already showed their hand back in Jan) as no one bit, but it backfired in that many fans and Cam himself thought this was the start of something good for Cam and Rhule, only to have the rug pulled out.  Handled extremely poorly morally and technically but the reality of NFL teams.  New regimes love to rebuild starting with QB.

You're ignoring the politics of the situation.  Cam can't be a Panther if Teddy is.  They've already made their choice and keeping Cam around just muddies it.  Cam was officially done the second Teddy was brought in.  and if it didn't happen then, Cam would be done as soon as the Panthers went to the podium at #6.  The Panthers moved on from Cam, unfortunately they didn't tell anyone else until last week.

Hi Teddytime, this would prevent the Panthers from making any mistakes.

If Teddy is all that he'll beat Cam. If Cam plays he has trade value or contract value.

No emotion.

Maybe I did a poor job of wording my post, or people didn't actually read it, or can't comprehend it.

I don't really care if people like Cam or hate Cam, that wasn't the point.  I was speaking more abuot how the front office should have handled this offseason.

I would be the first person to admit that there is no way I would have given Cam an extension this offseason.  I would have either received fair compensation for him via a trade or tried to make him play out the last year of his deal.  As it looks right now we probably aren't going to get much, if anything for him, that's a waste of an asset.

Once we signed TB we lost leverage, every team in the league knows we aren't going to keep both.

Don't sign a QB in free agency, don't trade up for one in the draft or reach for Herbert or Love.  (I would consider Tua if he falls but I think that is unlikely)

Cam was actually played well last year before he got hurt.  If he starts the majority of next season, and plays relatively well you might get 2 first rounders out of him if you don't think he is perfect for your system, or you decide you don't want to pay him $35m a year.

I can always sign a TB type of QB next season, or maybe I'm bad enough to get one of the top 2 QBs.

My main points was, everyone knew we were bad, and most likely going to be bad next year.  Everyone knows we should be rebuilding at least for this season.  Once TB agreed to come here people start to think we can win now, so the rebuild gets thrown out of the window.

Next thing you know we'll be trading up in the draft thinking we are one player away.

I don't really care about going 9-7 next year, my goal would be to build a team that can compete for the ultimate prize every year.

Putting off signing Bridgewater wasn't a realistic option.

They wanted him, but he had interest from other teams. Had they waited, he might have ended up somewhere else.

it's valid that the signing probably screwed them out of getting anything for Newton, but in the team's eyes at least, the worse outcome would have been not getting the player they wanted.

I just mean it'd never happen the team's done with Cam.  If they saw Cam as just an injury risk they would've brought in a different QB for lesser money.  I don't disagree with your idea, but Panthers never intended to give Cam a chance at any point to still be a Panther.

I think having both these guys at QB is our biggest asset at the moment. Pump up these assets trade or sign one.

Even you could aree to that Scot. We both know what would happen in a real competition. Don't we?

I understand blowing it up. Our defense has been shredded.

Yes.  if they wanted Teddy they had to get him that day or Teddy would be a Patriot right now.  Or if word broke out about Brady, then Teddy would be a Buc or possibly Charger.  Panthers didn't have a choice based on the situation but to pull the trigger on Teddy even with Cam still under contract.  Just release the guy already ...

Any notion that the team is going to keep Newton around or take him to training camp is pretty much delusional.

It's not happening.

No we don't, because we don't know if Newton can hold up.

Regardless of that though, whether you like it or not, whether you agree with it or not, and no matter what kind of spin you try to put on it, the Panthers believe that Teddy Bridgewater is a better option than Cam Newton right now.

it doesn't matter how many different fantasy scenarios you come up with for trying to keep Cam Newton on the team. It's not happening.
