Panthers hire new director of player personnel

Recommended Posts

Marty's contract is up after this season so why hire and AGM or someone with a title that will create headaches within the organization?

With this hire, we get a highly regarded talent in a very high front office position with us. The next move for a Dir of Player Personnel is often into a GM position.

My guess is that after Marty's contract runs out this year, he gets a lateral or respectable title/move within the Panthers organization and Stewart moves into this role.

Tepper has a plan and it's not an overnight plan. Hurney hit a homerun this offseason in the draft and FA (outside of Cam), but an under .500 record and countless questionable draft/FA moves previously, should not be overlooked.

Tepper was here for none of Hurney's first time as GM so that carries no weight with him. He got the improved version which by all reports he likes and thinks he is doing a good job. He will be replacing Hurney who will retire in the next few years. But until then Hurney is likely to be GM. Based on the draft and free agency so far, Hurney is doing a good job. There is no current reason to part ways at this point. Most people use his stint a decade ago to justify him being fired or demoted and that is totally irrelevant for Tepper who wasn't here until 2018. Why would be care about the distant past like most Hurney critics

We should absolutely keep Mike Shula!

No wait, I meant Ron Rivera!

Dang. Who is it you're defending this time?

Back to the exrremes again I see. I said on this forum that I thought it was time to move on from Shula and more recently Rivera. And honestly I wouldn't care if we move in from Hurney. The goal is to develop a winning culture and team. Whoever can help with that I will support. I just hope Tepper is right.

Yet another new front office addition......with ties to Baylor.

Like everyone else, this has been a particularly unusual offseason for Panthers director of player wellness Kent Johnston

When head coach Matt Rhule hired him earlier this year, Johnston assumed he'd start to get to know players when they returned to begin their offseason program in early April. Instead, he's been limited to select interactions through a screen.

"They meet us over the computer. But as you well know, that's not like knowing somebody," Johnston said in a phone interview this week. "But at the same time, it's the hand you're dealt. You better learn to deal with it and deal with it the best way you can, you know? That's what we're trying to do. We're trying to be proactive and not reactive to what's going on."

Johnston accumulated more than 20 years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach in the NFL, a journey that included stops in Tampa Bay, Green Bay, Seattle, Cleveland and San Diego. Johnston retired from the league in 2017 but then joined Rhule at Baylor for two seasons
