CHARLOTTE — The Panthers on Sunday made a series of transactions, signing wide receivers Tommylee Lewis and Marken Michel, and tight end Andrew Vollert.

In his fifth pro season, Lewis originally signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Illinois in 2016. He spent his first three seasons with New Orleans before joining the Lions in the 2019 offseason. After Detroit cut him last August, Lewis went to the XFL, where he played for the Dallas Renegades. He re-signed with the Saints in mid-March, but the club cut him earlier this month.

Lewis, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and offensive coordinator Joe Brady were all with the Saints in 2018. That year, Lewis was the target for the infamous non-call for pass interference against the Rams in the NFC Championship Game.

In 34 career games, Lewis has 20 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Michel originally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Massachusetts in 2016 but has spent most of his pro career with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders. Over two seasons, Michel played 24 games recording 132 receptions with 1,215 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

Michel's brother, Sony, is a running back for the Patriots.

Vollert has spent time with the Cardinals, Bengals, and Chargers since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Weber State. He tore his ACL during a 2019 preseason game with the Chargers and missed all of last season. He appeared on the first episode of this year's "Hard Knocks: Los Angeles," speaking to head coach Anthony Lynn after being cut on Aug. 1 in the roster reduction to 80 players.

As corresponding roster moves, the Panthers waived tight end Cam Sutton, linebacker Kyahva Tezino, and wide receiver DeAndrew White.

Carolina has also waived linebacker Jason Ferris from injured reserve.

Carolina's roster remains at 80 players.

I’d be concerned if they weren’t churning the bottom of the roster, especially with no preseason games and an expanded practice squad.

Can someone explain to me how we are doing all these new signings and getting the maximum out of them in this limited time? Are all these new additions bubbled somehow? Do they have a mandatory 4 negative test days in a row? I find it really hard to believe if they are just “walking off the street” we are testing them effectively. That goes for any team not just us.
