Jeff Davidson's play calling

Demerize

Recommended Posts

In the last two games I believe Jeff finally hit his stride (what took so long!). Yea, we lost to the Saints, but I actually enjoyed watching the game. If Jeff had started the season with this NEW highly conservative play calling scheme we might be 5 and 3. If we ever get a QB who can pass then Jeff can open things up a bit. I really did enjoy the game and now feel (if he keeps this up) we can win some games. Remove the "Jake Factor" or at least reduce it and we are actually competitive! Hip hip...:)

His stride is to run it on 3rd and 12. Luckily D-Will is outstanding.

I am of opposite mind when it comes to the playcalling it seems.

I understand what Davidson is doing, but really we might as well just take Delhomme out of the game and run the direct snap with different options.

Exactly. I can't understand leaving a QB on the field that you don't trust to throw the ball on 3rd down. They throw that sutpid smoke route, which doesn't work anymore, and he can't even complete that. Bad part is, we have no one to replace Jake in the future.

His play calling was good the 1st half, but I strongly disagree with the Capt. Conservative we all saw in the 2nd. I get running the ball/ clock out, but c'mon! 11 points was not enough on to keep the lead and if I knew that, then they should've also. I dont think that Jake is back to being completely comfortable under center, but he is more comfortable than Davidson is with him. There is no exploiting of the other team's weaknesses, there is the same mundane, blah playcalling that every team in the league is now expecting from the Panthers. They expect it, and we give them what they are expecting. How in the f__k can you win that way?!!? Get creative! Trash the old way of thinking 'cause its not working anymore!! See that Smitty TD last week? That is what Im talking about. They expected the usual smoke route, and we changed it up on them, and it worked, damnit. And we set it up to work again yesterday, but we didnt see it. If Davidson had called that play in the 3rd or early in the 4th, I think it would've sealed in the Saints first loss...

You could always look to the 2006 Browns, who eked out three wins while he was the OC there. His teams averaged a whopping 15 points per game, a massive improvement from the 14.6 his predecessor got. You know, the guy who was fired for being ineffective?

We have a great running attack. It would be better if we had a good passing attack so they can compliment each other. Consistently running the ball on third down situations yesterday led to New Orleans finally rising up to stop that. The implications are glaring, in that it's obvious nobody has ANY confidence in Jake to deliver. The run will set up play action passes. We didn't take enough advantage of that.

It's too bad D-Will was involved in 2 bad plays. He dropped the TD pass that forced us to settle for the FG, that changed certain dynamics of the game. Then the fumble deep that was ran in. It's too bad, because our defense played with real intensity, and the entire team showed how you can beat New Orleans! The special teams actually played pretty well (although I don't know why a fair catch wasn't done on the punt that led to D-Will's fumble). But we came tantalizingly close.

By the way, with Delhomme Davidson's offense has gotten 21.8 points per game.

Without him, his teams have averaged 14.8 points per game. That doesn't include his 15 points per game average with the Browns.

But it's easier to blame Jake and contend that Davidson is being held back, right?

Our Rushing attack scores practically all of our TD's so whats your point?

And jake still sucks.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
