For those wanting to draft a QB.... here's an interesting article in PFT

Could the reason we went with Teddy was more related to; they knew they would have a limited off-season, and he knew Brady and his system along with Cam's health in question? Nobody knew then that the OTA's would be cancelled, a limited training camp and preseason would be wiped out. I believe they thought they could maybe steal lighting in a bottle and find a really good QB in Teddy and build around him. I still think that's there plan.

The 49ers are proving having a lot of good, young players in the right system, no matter the QB, can win. That to me is the plan. I wouldn't doubt if they roll with Teddy next year and even try PJ a little more (he did play decent in his one game vs what Grier did the year before). To build a long term winner (in today's NFL) you need many good players in a good system with good coaches.

The 49ers are a six win team right now.

Interesting take as sometimes you still need good team around a high draft pick to really win. FA and the cost of keeping top players changed the game IMO.

let's not forget about Montana.  He was a 3rd round pick.  Johnny Unitas was a 9th round selection for Pittsburg and was cut and pick up by Baltimore.  Fran Tarkenton was a 3rd rounder draft pick.  Ken Stabler was a 2nd round pick.  Jim Kelly was a 14th pick in the 1st round.  You can fine a good QB in later rounds.  Just cause they are #1 doesn't make them Super Bowl winners.  Just think how long it took Elway to get his first win in a Super Bowl.

My point. We have 4. They were devastated with injuries (way more than us or maybe anybody in the NFL), working with a 3rd string QB and are still competitive. But more looking at last year. Grap wasn't that great of a QB and look where he got them. Yes, a better pass at the end wins it in the SB. The team is well balanced and well coached. They should be good year in and year out because of the system, balance of good players and what everybody needs - luck with injuries.

Farve was in the 2nd round by Atlanta and traded to Green Bay.  Unitas was my hero growing up.  Pittsburgh didn't even give him an opportunity.  Webb Ewbanks found him on a sandlot team in Pittsburgh.

You're correct and which is why I will be watching QBs in the combine.  I don't think we'll take project but I do believe the first round will not be the only round we look for a QB.

and if we beat the Saints, we pick around 12-14. We're gonna be taking a CB or LT at that point. If, like last year, our top 3 picks pan out and if 2 of all our FA signing pan out, that's 5 upgrades. If we don't lose Moton and Samuel and a healthy CMC, that's a pretty freaking solid team. Along with a coaching staff that has a year under their belt, with hopefully OTAs and a normal preseason, we WILL be better with Teddy or PJ at QB.

    • If a backup QB comes into a game down by 3 scores, they're passing. It's probably going to be 4:1 pass to run. The stats are going to be skewed. It's not going to be an accurate reflection of an entire game plan from start to finish. Pretty simple stuff.
    • if you are talking game production as the discussion, you basically are forced to remove them to even get in the realm of honest discussion.  Shough has a 2 pass 4th quarter game and a late 3rd quarter entrance game.  That will wildly distort the numbers if you are wanting to talk about what he has done in games.   and the generally narrative we talk about most QBs is their starts.  Because that what a QB is.  The Bryce gymnastics and gaslighting and way worse than the "hate" around here.
    • Well I'm watching every game this season so it's the same football, same time frame. I see things differently than you do. I can't tell what your actual opinion is because lately it's been coming from Joe Person and others.  For someone who doesnt believe in stats you sure as poo seem to be hung up on them. And let's not forget, Jake was a practice squad QB, not the number 1 overall draft pick. They aren't even comparable in expectations of past performance or expected level of QB play.  I didn't even mention stats for the 1st 2 years with Bryce. That would be you. What he looked like from the 1st 2 years was that same QB with the same god awful mechanics making throws squared up to the line, not driving his passes, bailing out of the pocket too early, sloppy footwork on drop backs, hopping to get his pass over the line because he's not tall enough to actually throw over a defensive player. When things aren't perfect, he looks like that same awful rookie player. That's why I said you can't ignore past performance. You go back and look to see if he's still doing those things or if he's developing.
