The roster is set, who are you excited to watch this year?

The team announced the opening night roster: https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/canes-announce-2020-21-opening-night-roster/c-320234206

Five players I'm most excited to watch this season:

  • Andrei Svechnikov - Arguably the most exciting young player in the game. This is the season he becomes a household name.
  • Martin Necas - If he takes another step forward, the Canes could have a crazy good top six.
  • Nino Niederreiter - Dude struggled last year. If he steps up, this offense could be one of the best in the division.
  • Haydn Fleury - We've been waiting a while for him to get his shot and he's looked great in camp.
  • Dougie Hamilton - He was having an amazing season before breaking his leg last year, guy could compete for the Norris this year.

Honorable mention: Morgan Geekie. Currently the NHL leader in points per game. Looked awesome before the pandemic pause last year but did not get a lot of playoff minutes.

Fleury for sure, arguably our best defender in the bubble last year.

Honorable mention to Skjei and Bean.

I’d like to see Bean play well this year and then attach a pick to Gardiner to have  Seattle select him in the expansion draft. Our defense could be downright unfair if Skjei and Bean live up to RBA’s preseason praises.

Slavin - Hamilton

Skjei - Pesce

Bean - Fleury

This guy mainly because his name is really fun to try to say.

I hope to contribute actual hockey talk at some point in the near future.

Don't worry! The learning curve is not that intense and Canes fans are among the most welcoming in hockey. It's basically soccer on ice but 100X faster and with more fighting and action.

Really appreciating the primers you've been posting up. I've been wanting to get more into hockey for the last couple of years and your knowledge + enthusiasm has been a blessing in finally getting somewhere with that.

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
