How Christiansen compares to other tackles in arm length.

It is a strange metric, but arm length appears to be a big deal and why Christensen may or may not be able to play LT in the NFL.  You would never think an inch would make this big of a difference but my wife might disagree.

arm length is an important issue but so is hand placement and strength.  A lack of arm length can cause lunging (waist bending) but a good overall athlete can negate it.  Look, football is a great game because you use strengths to attack weaknesses while your weakness are being attacked by strengths.   I do not expect a learning curve of less than one year for BC, but if he is better than Irving, go with him.  Use Tremble to chip; make sure he and the LG eat sleep and study together.

Christensen might not look like an elite athlete, but he absolutely is. He measured in at 6-5 and 302 pounds at BYU's Pro Day and managed to run a 4.89 40-yard dash, put up 30 reps on the bench, set an all-time broad jump record for an offensive lineman at 10-5, show off a 34-inch vertical, run the shuttle in 4.46 and the three-cone in 7.33. Let's put those numbers into perspective, shall we?

Christensen's 4.89 40-yard dash would have been best of offensive tackles in the 2019 NFL Combine. And second best in the 2018 NFL Combine. And second best in the 2017 NFL Combine. One of the fastest offensive tackles in the last several years and he's 'not an elite athlete?'

Christensen's 34-inch vertical jump would have been best of offensive tackles in the 2019 NFL Combine. It was tied for the top mark in the 2018 NFL Combine. It was the best (by three full inches) in the 2017 NFL Combine. Seems like athleticism, doesn't it?

Christensen's 4.49 in the shuttle would have been second best in the 2019 NFL Combine, tied for second best in 2018's NFL Combine, and best in 2017. If he's not among 'the best athletes' then I don't know who is.

Christensen's 30 bench reps was second in the 2019 NFL Combine, best in 2018, and best in 2017.

Should we do the three-cone? We kind of have to at this point, don't we?

His three-cone number was best in 2019, second best in 2018, and second best in 2017.

For not being 'an elite athlete' he sure is putting up elite athletic numbers. Christensen tested among the best athletes in the last four years to play the offensive tackle position, and yet, people are still peddling the 'unathletic' narrative. Yikes.

I'm just giving my opinion on what I see. I'm not rooting against him. He very well could get the job done. I am a competitive powerlifter, I am aware of weight room strength. That doesn't always translate to on the field strength though. I hope he does well, I just see why he dropped. We need depth at that position so im not complaining. I am just at a wait and see pov on this dude.

One other point---balance and footwork are more important, in my opinion, that arm length if the T is quick to recognize the move, he will be able to engage.  It is sorta like boxing, where the long armed guys try to use that as an advantage, but the shorter armed guys know how to negate that advantage.  Yes, the longer armed T has the advantage, but not if he bends or can't keep his feet in the proper position.

    • This is huge may not be a trap game but this plays a major part in what they want to do. If we can get some pressure on Sam we know what he does with pressure coming hit and heavy. Also we may be able to take the top off their defense a backup safety trying to stop TMac or Cooker over the top or forcing him to play the backend should allow us to run the ball somewhat effectively. Either they allow some runs or we take some shots and if Bryce and whoever can connect deep we’ll be in business for another big time win against a top notch opponent. Might not be a trap game but health travel game plans all play a major role in each weeks game plan and this week might be leaving our way. We’re missing some replaceable pieces they’re missing key anchors to the offense and defense major difference time to solidly ourselves at one of the top teams in the nfc tomorrow fellas buckle up.
    • Yes.  If I am not mistaken, we need to sign Coker to the ERFA tender and insist that XL spends his spring and summer at a WR camp and not Coon huntin on his four wheeler.  XL was raw when we picked him--which is why I wanted to go another direction--and we are seeing how raw.  He is basically learning a position.     The Panthers will make their move in 2026 to be an NFL powerhouse behind Bryce.  Bryce needs intelligent WRs who catch the ball.  That said, we need a solid #2 to challenge XL and make cutting him easy, if necessary.  A #2 WR (intented to be a #1 by now) with under 400 yards is embarrassing.   On offense, you have to ask, "Where can we get better?"  In my view, #2 WR, TE (although they are improving) and maybe C (again, if we re-sign Mays, he is trending up and at 26, entering his prime--I say stay with him and find competition later in the draft (not good for C).  OL depth maybe?  In other words, XL is a glaring weak spot.
