#32 is $2.5m based on average.  His contract is $5m.  He would actually slot it at #21

Left Tackle Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap

Fans tend to think of the top-5 contracts as being average when they aren't.

Also he has the 13th highest cap hit on the team this year.

If he starts and plays well he is a bargain compared to the top LTs in the game but not all of the starters.  Conversely if he doesn't start or plays poorly he is a terrible deal.

The problem is next year. If Erving(2.2M)and Elf(1.3M) were signed to one year deals for their cap hits this year, no problem. But the team is either paying them 7M+ Each next year, or cut them at 10.5M. They better start somewhere. Or that’s a lot for backups

We paid Matt Kalil 25M for 1 year.

We just signed Moton at  17M/yr  5 yr.

We paid Okung 13M/yr 1year.

We are paying Erving 5M/yr  2 yr.

Yes there are many starting tackles making 5/yr or less, but MOST are on their rookie contracts.

5M/yr is expensive for a swing tackle and cheap for a starting left tackle.

Most but not all.

I'm not saying his contract will prevent someone else from starting at LT buts it pretty obvious that when he was signed the coaches thought there was a good chance he would start.

I will say though that it was small enough that it left the option of drafting Sewell on the table, and I think that was by design.  If we would have drafted him he could started the season as the starter or a swing tackle.

We went through 5 left tackles last year.

So the solution was to pay a fringe starter who has battled injuries a contract even he was surprised to be offered? Look I know we have the shiny new car smell with this regime in the air around here but how is that a drastically different move from years past? It seems a bit like a panic contract to cover our ass. Again I hope he starts but if he misses time or does not contribute much it's not a good deal for us.

I agree.  So I went, combined the RT and LTs and sorted.  Sure enough, Erving is 38th (hes not on the list, he's listed as Guard btw)

36 Rookie Contract:  Penei Sewell    $6,024,767
37 Jesse Davis    $5,016,667
39 Rookie Contract:  Jedrick Wills    $4,925,729

Jess Davis played Guard in 2018, RT in 2019, 2020 back to Guard

Miami Dolphins Jesse Davis is going to have competition for the roster (phinphanatic.com)

"The problem that Davis faces is that he is not flashy and while he can play both guard and tackle positions, he doesn’t excel at any one in particular. The Dolphins felt the need to upgrade those spots in spite of Davis starting....

This year, I would think that Davis will make the roster once again but I can’t be certain of that anymore..... Davis is entering his 5th season in 2021 and that is still young for a lineman but the fact he hasn’t cemented a starting position shows that his value to the team is as a flexible backup that can be inserted at any time."

No we were looking to the draft.  When Erving was signed, Sewel was on the table, and we almost got him if the Lions hadn't taken him one spot before and then moved him to RT smh.  He was on our board. If we got him we'd have to find something else to bitch about other than LT.

    • I think Bryce is going to be brought back, but I also think it is a good year to draft a QB in the middle rounds who might fall.  There are some who were once thought to be first rounders and who are suddenly 2nd or 3rd rounders.  One example is Sellers who is supposedly falling into the late first--if he continues to drop, we'd be stupid not to move up into the early second and take him--imo.  He is Cam Lite, if you ask me.  Of course, as the draft gets closer, there will be premiums put on QBs.  We can already put Simpson, Moore, Mendoza in the top 5 or so, imo, the next tier is where the QB value is going to be
    • Aggressively go after a QB? Like 2 first rounders, a second rounder and TMac aggressive? That's what got us here. Build the team, then get the QB. If you think this passing offense is set minus BY today, you're not being honest with yourself. Now they have potential, but they aren't as good as many seem to think. I can't think of any games this season where I said yeah our receivers and TEs are better than theirs. If they can upgrade QB without doing something ridiculous, then I'm all for it. If not, then continue to improve the TEAM and THEN get your rookie QB like they should have done 3 seasons ago.
