I think we made a huge upgrade in our two deep but basically no upgrade in our starting OL. This is, of course, all theoretical. They have taken no actual snaps as a unit yet.

I see where you are coming from, but we did draft an OL in the 3rd. The FA signings can be criticized, buts let’s see the final product first. I’m curious to where they all fit in. Is Moton LT or RT this year? Where does Christensen line up? Does Paradis improve in his second year in Rhule’s system? Do Elf and Erving play better in our system than their previous ones? There are still a lot of unanswered questions, I think our staff is calling it “fluid” right now.

We added basically nothing and lost little if you don't include Okung.

So, I suppose if you don't include him it is a push. And it was a much, much worse line than some of the stats even indicate because of Teddy.

Tried to do a little looking, correct me if im wrong.

Lose Okung, Larsen, Schofield, Reed

Added Erving, Elflein, Brown, Moore, and Christensen

I get it that our additions on paper don't' seem great but if you don't count Okung, because of the injuries, then I'm not sure losing Larsen, Schofield, and Reed is going to make your OL exponentially worse as some people want to predict.

Depending on what ranking you want to use, we were middle third in the league last year and will probably be middle third this year.  If some of the sack and/or pressure numbers gets worse it will probably be because of Sam and not the fact that are OL is actually worse.

I would be surprised if our 3rd rounder makes the starting lineup. It would be(hopefully) a very pleasant surprise.

I was low on him during the draft and I haven't seen really any early takes that make me think otherwise. But, this is also where the rubber meets the road. We should know in the next couple of weeks at least what our two deep looks like.

Outside that, it will take a few games to see what we have as a unit. And, that is under the assumption that we can stay healthy. That is honestly one of the biggest concerns. Our FA signings have very big injury red flags, so continuity may suffer if we aren't able to keep them healthy. It was a big problem with last year's unit, as well.

I think on paper it definitely isn't an upgrade, especially considering Okung. Even without it is basically a push.

My concern is that Darnold has been a massive bust and at least a portion of that can be attributed to a poor offensive line. I was not a fan of the Teddy signing nor was I a fan of his play but we do have to fully admit that he made our OL look much better than it was, even while dinking and dunking to an ineffective overall offense.

Darnold isn't that guy. He is a classic gunslinger and they traditionally fare very poorly when pressured. So, to me that is a big concern. The kid has been an absolute disaster in his career so far and putting up a poor offensive line in front of him is not the path to success, even with our plethora of offensive weapons. Ultimately, we need to set him up to be successful, not just with scheme and weapons but with OL talent, as well.

Here again, I think our line was closer to middle of the pack than most people want to admit.  Almost every fanbase thinks they have the absolute worse OL, when in reality there are a lot of bad ones.

Also if he needs a top-5 OL to be successful that actually tells me he isn't a franchise QB.

It depends on the metrics we look at. I think scheme(Brady) and QB(Teddy) made our OL stand out more in some stats that it should have. We will see this year because we don't have an OL friendly QB. If anything, he should be a big negative for them.

So, if our OL excels, it will be a huge positive towards that narrative that we were/are a much better OL than expected.

Well he is likely to be behind one if the worst OL's he has ever had, so I don't know how exciting that stat is.

So...You went from this.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
