We're actually top 10 in pocket time.

Looking at it under this lens, I'm not sure pocket time is a very good measurement for an OLine.  Looking at that list, there is a mix of great and crap OLines in that top 10.  While our pocket time numbers look good, I'm not sure it's really telling us anything.

What doesn't look good is hurries, pressures and hits.  Basically, what the stats seem to be saying - to me at least - is that Sam is doing a good job of understanding his line isn't as strong as it should be.  He knows, and he's getting rid of the ball quickly.

We're also seeing a pretty high blitz rate, which certainly impacts pocket time, pressures, hurries, etc.  I think that makes sense.  You have a questionable OLine and a QB who until recently was known to make poor decisions under duress.  Sam just needs to keep making good decisions and beating the blitz.

I think a better set of stats to look at for OLine is rushing.  For example:

That is sorted by Yards before Contact, per attempt.  We are second from bottom.  When you flip that sort the other direction, you see something that looks a lot more like what you'd expect.

Imagine what CMC would look like if he were 3 yards downfield before he was touched.

Don't let a single stat fool you into thinking our OLine is "ok" / "average".

There's some good points here.

Both in stats and  watching, our line performs better in Pass Pro than in run blocking.  We  say we scheme around it in pass pro and I believe there's an element of truth to that.

But is scheme part of the problem with our run blocking?

The year before Joe Brady came, 2019, our YBC/Att of 3.1, was 3rd BEST in the league.  That was the year the line performed so bad in pass pro, we went through 3 Qbs and led the league with 58 sacks!

Joe brady was not an OC at LSU, he was a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
He was at the Saints in 2018.  In 2018 the Saints YBC/Att was 2.0 yards, 28th in the league.

Could it be that we suck in run blocking, in part because our run scheme sucks?

2021 NFL Advanced Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Net Passing Yards     PktTime    Sacks           Hits      Hurries
                              League Average 735 2.35 7 10 11
                             Carolina Panthers 854 2.4 6 11 13
                          New Orleans Saints 341 2.5 7 12 6
                                Atlanta Falcons 656 2.3 7 15 11
                   Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1049 2.3 6 5 9

You keep trying to prove that our O-line isn't bad but you are using limited stats to do so.  You need to equate those stats for number of drop backs.  TB has 9 hurries, we have 13 but they have over 30% more pass attempts.

Instead of looking at number of pressures lets look at percentage of drops backs where the QB is pressured.

2021 NFL Advanced Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Saints are 29th in the league, we are 24th, Atlanta is 22nd, and TB is 2nd.

Basically Carolina, Atlanta, and New Orleans are all doing a bad job and all three are below average, but you keep trying to convince yourself that we are somewhere close to average this year but we aren't.

@Catsfan69 Our team has had a total of 2 more pressures than the league average.  The Falcons have had  more pressures than we have, for fewer yards.  I'm not saying we have a good line.  I'm saying we don't have the worst and that PFF is wrong.  Just as Paradis is not a better center than Brian Burns is an edge.

    • I love this draft because they picked the right OL.  It is possible that we have 2 rookies starting on the OL.  I would take Utah's Lomu as well, but for those who think you find the OL in free agency and not the draft, here is all I have to say:  We cannot give $110m to the 5 starting OL.  We need an infusion of youth on the OL as well.  If Ickey returns and can play, I imagine that he takes over for Hunt at RG--in 2027 or so.  Currently, our 2 guards and right tackle make up over 20% of the total cap.  We have to add 2 starters, but if Cade Mays was too pricey at around (anticipated) $8m, then we plan to draft a C, it seems. I think we draft an OT and C now because we will need a G or 2 and a RT soon.  While they were good in 2026, they were not elite.  For that kind of $$, we need elite.  Is starting a rookie LT and C ideal?  Nope.  But if we can get better than Nijman and Mays, we should be OK. I think we will pick up an ILB in free agency and add an ILB.  Who we draft (Mike or Will) will depend on who we sign.  Rodriguez is a favorite of mine, but if Golday is there, Morgan is going to take him.  Morgan will love him. I do not think we need to overpopulate the edge position right now because we have 1 edge returning from injury (Jones II), one rookie from last year ready to step up and could be really good (Scourton), and another who could be ready to step into the situational pass rusher role (Princely).  2 hold the edge very well and if we had a situational pass rusher to join Princely, we could be much better. I think rookies at Edge tend to jump considerably from their rookie seasons to years 2 and 3.  (Charles Johnson, Mike Rucker, and Greg Hardy were that way-and all became very good in time. Safety seems omitted, but we shall see.  That could be another free agent acquisition.
    • Id like Evans from Duke in the draft as a shooter for the second unit. And probably a more athletic big to replace all, he's good but doesn't really fit the style. White, Evans, green, Williams and center tbd is a pretty good second unit
