If that pass had been completed, many of the same ones who are decrying it so much on these boards would be the very same ones asking why haven't we done that more often? Everyone knows that! Also, on a second and long, the defense knows that that is a perfect opportunity to take a shot, and are much more likely to be on the lookout for that than on 3rd and 1. I don't adovcate doing that a lot on 3rd and short, but the fact that we have NEVER done it this year is reason to try it in the first place. If we complete it, it may end up as a different result for the game. If nothing else, it gives defenses the rest of the way this season to be wary of such a call, and not 'assume' a run is guaranteed, which will actually help the run if and when that is called. The incomplete pass had nothing to to do with the final result. Nothing. It was a good call, and I do ask why haven't we tried that before?

If I buy a lottery ticket and win, its a good investment. If I don't win, its a waste of money. Given that Jake has completed about 3 or 4 tops of those types of passes all season, I don't think it was a wise investment.

Yep. Fox & Davidson should tell Jake to run the ball on 3rd & 1 than telling him to throw it. I'm sure Jake would've let Williams run the ball on that one if he went on his own play than from Fox & Davidson.

Here's the deal. I have no problem going deep from time to time. Sure it makes sense. But notice WHO was going deep? SS. In the past we railed on Moose going deep then sitting on the sidelines the next two plays.

You have to compartmentalize THIS game in all it's context.

If DWill was not having any success running the ball, sure, take your shots dowfield. But he was running well.

Because SS is the only deep threat this team again continues to be easy to gameplan for.

If is a big word. If Dwill doesn't get tackled etc.

3rd and 1 by and large is a running down. But when you got a guy avg almost a 1st down everytime he touches the ball you deserve to be called jackass the day after.

My whole thing on this is they played the wrong odds. The D was proving they couldn't stop your run so do it until they puke.

I agree with most of your points. However, it's the point you make about Smitty being 'easy to gameplan' for that makes this call the right one. On a thrid and 1, after having NOT done anything other than run in such situations all year (at least early in the games), the call showed that it was a correct one, precisely because Smitty was so open! He had a couple steps on the DB, and it was 1 on 1 coverage at that. The pass unfortunately missed. Given the horrible play calling that was featured on our first possession in the red zone, this was a much better gamble than the decision to abandon the run has been in this and other games. Taking ONE long shot downfield is NOT abandoning the run, it is just that, a shot. I hope to see more of them, especially now that we're 4-6 and going nowhere..

If you figure there is a 20% chance Jake will make the long Steve Smith connection (I'm being generous) and DWill has a 60% chance of getting a first down (I'm sure his chances were better)... which play do you choose?

I understand 3rd and 1 long pass is probably not defensed as well... but look who's throwing the ball... Jake ain't no Joe Montana (or even the Jake of 2 years ago)... he's been living off dink and dunk plays.

    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
