Tepper / Hurney comments about Rhule's hire

as much as i’d like to pin this all on hurney, tepper is just as responsible (if not more responsible bc he holds the golden pen and signs off on everything) for what now appears to be a boneheaded hire that set this organization back several years.

…furthermore, the day he declared that it’s going to take 5 or so years for the team to be competitive, he doomed us all to experience the current product that’s on the field. it’s hard enough to contend in the NFL when you’re actually trying. it’s almost impossible to contend when you’re resigning yourself as an owner to compulsory mediocrity.

Not going to lie. I was happy with the Rhule hire. It was between him and Stefanski for me.

Like I stated in another thread, I hated the staff his put together and it proved to be valid. They’re all clueless. I haven’t seen anyone get better since we drafted them.

But I can’t discredit his drafts. He has shown an eye for talent. Sure, he drafted a LS and went all defense in another but no one is perfect in the draft.

Everyone preaches BPA so we can’t all burn him for the Brown & Horn picks. A lot of you were slurpers at the time.

But yes, burn him at the stakes for green lighting Irving & Eflein the 1st day of FA, not playing BC & Brown & for even remotely thinking this OL needed minimum work.

Also burn the body again to make sure he is not a witch for his QB evaluations. They’ve been downright horrendous and have set us back tremendously.

With that said & I hope that I am wrong, I think he gets another year. He’s been stubborn to this point but unfortunately he is getting introduced to the big boy leagues. We need to hope he learns or at least dedicates this offseason to the OL so when the next HC comes in he only has to focus on a QB.

My immediate reaction when the news of Rhule's hiring broke was "Okay?!" 😕

Was pretty disappointed up front that we didn't go ahead and at least interview McDaniels. FYI: Word is he's heating up as a candidate again this cycle and some folks expect he'll get a job this time around (not from us, of course).

Where I really cringed was when the stories that are quoted in the OP came out. Made me immediately think of an elderly or mentally challenged person listening to a bombastic sales pitch, falling for it hook line and sinker and wanting to sign on the dotted line immediately.

Buuuut like I have with plenty of other decisions I disagreed with, I did my best to get on board. And at least for a year or so, it looked like it was going to be okay.

Damn, did things go to hell quick though 😖

    • I’ve seen mock drafts have us picking the OSU DT Kayden McDonald. If he is BPA I’m for it. I still remember the days we had Short and Star anchoring our DLine on the best Panther defense. https://catcrave.com/panthers-forecasted-baffle-fans-with-first-round-decision-2026-nfl-draft
    • Not the best year to need a HC. I haven't heard much about the Texans DC getting any looks
    • I have not seen a good fit yet as a HC hire. Honestly, Saleh is probably the best one and that’s not saying much. Miami- Hired a DC with an average defense. Check the rest of his resume. It also doesn’t solve your main problem at QB with Tua/Ewers, etc. Clear downgrade from Mike McDaniel. The owner obviously thought he had a shot at Harbaugh and fired McDaniel to throw his hat in, Waller has an interview that gives the impression of this. Atlanta- Stefanski has won like 6 games in 2 years. Carried a few years ago by his defense. Defense has gotten older and he got exposed. Brought into Atlanta with a DC he didn’t hire. No idea what they are going to do at QB, no 1st round pick, a lot of resigning. Oh and their Dan Morgan/John Lynch/ John Elway guy is Matt Ryan who has not worked in the front office at all. At least Dan was a scout, director, asst GM, etc. New York-Not bad really but he’s only going to be as good as his OC. Joe Schoen is still the guy getting your talent, and good luck playing Dak Prescott, The Eagles D, and Jayden Daniels 6 times per year with the NY media writing about everything you’ve done wrong. Tennessee- meh. Probably should have gotten an OC to develop Ward but Saleh can at least make this team aggressive and physical again. I doubt many wanted the job. If Saleh fixes the culture and gets a decent play caller he will be okay. The GM there seems promising. If I had to rank the rest of the openings I’d say: 1-Pittsburgh: Enough talent to be competitive. Have some things to fix at key positions but long history of success and winning is in that building. Plus, you get Baltimore and Cleveland twice per year (I’ll get to that). 2-Baltimore: What in the ever living hell makes you think it’s time to walk away from Harbaugh. He didn’t leave like Tomlin, you fired him then the owner joked about it at the press conference. Who did you ever think you were going to get better than him. Somebody to support Lamar? Like drive him to the practices he never attends? 3-Buffalo I mean you get Josh Allen but they promoted Beane to be their Morgan and if you watched the Press Conference today the owner made Tepper look like Arthur Blank. Basically said he fired McDermott just over losing to the Broncos. Beane got up there and poo on a few players. The two leading candidates are Joe Brady, your current OC and Brian Daboll, your former OC who just got done running a circus on the other side of the state. Like the Ravens, who did you think you would get that was better? 4-Las Vegas Spytek seems competent as a GM and Brady is in the building but there is a real stink culture built into that organization that somebody is going to eventually have to fix. It seems like everyone that gets close (Gruden, Carroll, Pierce) gets fired. At least you have a shot with a potential Franchise QB in Mendoza. 5-Arizona Gannon just collapsed. Don’t know what happened, but it seems like Kyler is gone with no real plan in place. Maybe resign Brissett? Maybe take another down year and just rebuild the roster? Who really knows. I don’t see them having any shot landing a big fish, I honestly forget they don’t have a HC half the time. 6-Cleveland There’s a reason McCarthy and McDaniel turned them down. Still have Watson on the books. Have to deal with the Shaduer fans and haters. Aging defense. Don’t imagine Schwartz will stay on as DC if he is turned down, so there that goes. Honestly, I think Schwartz by the only guy that wants the job.
