Official Canes Off-season Thread

There's a reason they're not staying in Pittsburgh. Far too expensive. Malkin (35 years old and hasn't played a full season in years) left Pittsburgh with a $9.5M AAV and Letang (also 35 years old) with $7.25M. Please- neither are worth that kind of money.

Honestly with the way our goal scorers disappeared in the playoffs, Im not even sure adding 2 more would be enough. We should aim for 3 and/or light a fire under everyones asses that they are expected to play at full potential at all times. Even stars like Svech. Easily the most disappointing one.

You aren’t wrong. That’s 2 years in a row Aho and Svech just disappeared in the round they lost in. For us to win a cup next year those boys HAVE to cook in the playoffs. If not, you actually may see rod on the hot seat.

Sorry for late reply, but yeah I agree. In any sport if your team suddenly becomes undisciplined and doesn`t perform in crucial situations over and over again, especially in the playoffs, it means there is something up with the coaching. Seems like Rod can get the best out of the players in the regular season, but something happens in the playoffs. Idk if he is too lax or he needs better assistant coaching, but something needs to be fixed.

You guys think we might do anything at the draft this Thursday?

The NHL draft more resembles the MLB draft than it does the NFL. Almost nobody drafted in the NHL finds themselves sitting on an NHL team that season. Most draftees spend time in the minors or developmental leagues before making it to the big ice.

That being said, the Canes have no 1st round pick this year and are thought to be looking at defensemen in the draft. Owner Tom Dundon has stated publicly he'd never use a first round pick on a blue-liner because their upside is so damn difficult to predict. That's good, the Canes have no 1st rounder, so make your first pick in the second round a defenseman.

The Canes farm system is stacked right now- no need to trade draft picks. Let teams looking to rebuild and add youth to their rosters come to the Canes and offer picks for prospects.

Regarding the whole Malkin/Letang rumor:  Eklund throws things at the wall and sees what sticks 98% of the time.  Hockeybuzz isn't reliable at all, I am shocked it is still around.

I usually agree, but he pulled it from Friedman who is a tad more reliable. Still don’t think they are options.

Yep, Penguins got a decent deal.  He could have made more, but I would have worried at the end of his contract.  D-men can fall off quickly.

He's already fallen off. His offensive skills are still decent, but he's almost a defensive liability at this point.

In other news on Draft Day 1:

Toronto traded Peter Mrazek and their 25th pick to Chicago for Chicago's 38th pick. Chicago then drafted a high school blue liner and have to pay Mrazek $3.8M for the next 2 seasons.

Chicago is in full rebuild, sending DeBrincat to Ottawa in exchange for the 7th overall this year, a 2nd rounder this year and a 3rd round pick in 2024. DeBrincat has 2 straight 40+ goal seasons at just 24 years old. He was a $6.4M cap it and scheduled to be an RFA after the 22-23 season.

Arizona traded up to get Morgan Geekie's brother, Conor, at #11 last night.

The Rangers traded goalie Alexander Georgiev to Colorado for a few draft picks down the road. The Avs Darcy Kuemper, who hoisted the Cup this season, is a UFA as Colorado can't afford to keep him.

    • I must apologize, my sarcasm at times doesnt translate well in text form lol. At this point I would welcome us signing him, Trey Lance, trading for Jameis Winston, asking about Deshaun Watson and playing phone tag with Tom Brady before I ever fully entertain a season of Bryce Young being the defacto Starting Quarterback of the Panthers.

    • We had a QB who could do that and its the last time we went to the Super Bowl and the only time we had an MVP. Once he lost his ability to do that he was out of the league. To filter out insignificant stats I will only look at QBs who have played in 10 or more games this year. There are 28 qualifying QBs. Bryce is 25th in Air Yards per Attempt at 6.4. Only Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, and Dillon Gabriel are worse (6.0, 5.8, 5.1). Trevor Lawrence, Patrick Mahomes, and CJ Stroud are the median QBs at 7.1. Drake Maye and Sam Darnold lead the league at 8.7. Bryce is 18th in the league for passes that travel 30+ yards at 12. The median is Caleb Williams at 15. The league leader is Matthew Stafford with 26. With passes that travel 40+ yards, Bryce is tied with three others at 21st in the league with 3. Only Jacoby Brissett, Cam Ward, Joe Flacco, and Dillon Gabriel are worse. The median is a three-way tie with Drake Maye, Trevor Lawrence, and Baker Mayfield with 6. The league leader is Sam Darnold with 12. Having the ability to complete passes down the field (not YAC) stretches the defense and makes them account for more ground. It keeps players out of the box and keeps formations in nickel or dime, less line backers for your RBs to worry about. Bryce is why we have 2 losses against the Saints. If he had the outright ability to sling the football down field we beat the easily, but he doesn't. So they crowded the box and our 2 starting caliber RBs with our top ~10 Oline couldn't carry the offense to a win on their own. The limitations of the offense fall squarely on Bryce.
