Rarely mentioned QB option for next year: Trade for Matt Leinart

if Leinart is a WCO guy, he'd fit right in there with Garcia: makes no damn sense.

however, if i was the carolina front office, i would draft a QB in the second round to groom for the future, and then sign a veteran who's already got a number of years under his belt in a pro system... even an "old" guy like Warner or Favre (not necessarily those guys) that can rely on the running game but still throw a mistake-free game when necessary.

if leinart fits into the picture there, awesome.

They were apparently close to trading him for Brandon Marshall this offseason:

So it looks like they've at least considered it. Of course, you never know about Internet reports.

And you're right that I'm sure he would love to play in a big market, but he doesn't get much say in a trade. If traded, I can promise you that he wouldn't veto it. It might be a challenge resigning him, but he would play here if traded.

Yea, I dont know if I buy the Broncos trading a top 5 Wide receiver for a backup QB.

Even if he is a trouble maker.

I'd rather get a young QB in the 2nd round, playing for second round money.

Also, Fox and his staff may be gone. So we might could actually develop a QB.

But I still believe Matt Moore is the future. So I may not be the one to ask lol.

Leinart's played very well the past two weeks. Two weeks isn't a lot to go off of course, but I think he's the most attractive option out there if the Cards are willing to part ways with him. He's certainly better than the free agent quarterbacks that will be out there and he'll be able to start immediately. If you pick a quarterback with the second-round pick, odds are extremely high that he won't be able to play right away.

I've thought about this option as well, but I think "played very well the past two weeks" is a bit of a stretch. He hasn't thrown an INT, but he hasn't thrown a single TD yet either. I realize this isn't fantasy football we're talking about, but they've looked extremely handicapped with him in there. I'd say he's looked "acceptable" at best.

Such as...?

Despite having arguably the best receiving tandem in the league, playing badly enough that the team would rather go with Kurt Warner (a decision that was made before Warner had truly re-established himself).

Leinart is one of those really bad trade options - similar to Quinn - because he hasn't really shown anything to prove that he can be a franchise QB. But because he was a high pick and still has "plenty of potential" the team trading him would want more in return than he's realistically worth.

Those are the kind of trades a GM makes if he's in a good position to gamble.

I don't think we're in that position.

Matt Leinart has shown as much as quarterbacks like Matt Schaub and Kyle Orton had before teams traded for them. If you think that he's a better quarterback than the free agent quarterbacks and the second-round potential rookie quarterbacks out there and the Cards are willing to do it, why not trade for Leinart if the price is right?

And it's unfair to hold his benching against him. He was only in his second year and got benched in favor of an MVP candidate. How many quarterbacks are doing great their second year? How was Jake Delhomme doing his second year in the league?

.......no...

The guy has Litz, Bolden, Breasten, and beast RBs out of the backfield that can catch...and he only throws for 150 yards against a mediocre titan secondary...

Similar answers to "should we sign Drew Brees???" .....no way......

"should we trade for Phillip Rivers?" ....no...he throws weird....

Leinart is as good as anyone available in free agency........I am not saying he is Phillip Rivers or Drew Brees by no means but he is youg and has the P word..potential.

Exactly. No quarterback is perfect and makes total sense to go after. They all have flaws. Yet someone like Leinart has more potential than most. At worst, he's an upgrade over our current starting quarterback. At best, he's a massive upgrade. I'm not seeing a downside here.
