What three games...

Other than the ones mentioned:

the 2001 home game against the Saints. Steve Smith returned a punt for a TD in the closing seconds, only to see Ricky Williams score the game winning TD with 1 second on the clock.

I was at that game and it was a kick in the balls for sure.

2003 vs Tennessee

I don't know why I didn't put Super Bowl in the list of what I was expecting. Maybe because the Pathers were underdogs and only led one time in that game, by one point.

Would the Arizona game be a stomach punch game considering it was such a blowout? A stomach punch, by Bill Simmons' definition, is one where victory gets taken away from you unfairly. I've had two in my life...Christian Laettner and Donnie Moore (all I have to say is their names and you know what game I'm talking about).

The three games that would best fit the Simmons definition, to me, would be the 04 Saints game, because that team had tried so valiantly to come back from 1-7, the 04 Falcons game (same reason), and the Super Bowl, simply because the Panthers had been money in overtime that year.

See the stomach punch games always come when you're THIS close to doing something special.

I wasn't able to re-watch the superbowl loss until this year. But at least that was a good game that could have gone either way. I think I won't be able to watch the Arizona playoff game until ...well never. Everything had lined up, we were gonna have home field with the giants loss. I still can't believe how badly we loss that game. It feels like a light graze against my balls every time I think of that game. God such bad memories..why even make this post..........AAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I remember a home game in 2001 where we lost in part because of a late safety against us. The safety happened because our guy (I believe it was Doug Evans) either picked up a fumble or grabbed an INT and his momentum carried him into the end zone. My memory is hazy on some aspects, the game (I believe) was against either the Saints or the Jets. The rule that allowed for the call was changed soon after that season, nowdays it would be ruled a touchback. Regardless, the safety ended some momentum we had in that game. That game with the safety seemed to eptomize that season.

My next game was a preseason game we played against Denver in 1997. Terminal scumbag Bill Romanowski blitzed and jammed his helmet up under Kerry Collins' face mask and broke his jaw, not to mention blasting out several of Collins' teeth. That and the Kevin Greene soap opera threw a pall on things that ruined any chance of repeating the success of 1996. What made things worse was that no one retaliated for Collins, which indicated some things about how Collins was viewed, feelings about him which became public later. The team didn't respect him, and let that blatant hit go by unchallenged!

Third game was already mentioned, the 2004 game at Atlanta. That one really hurt..

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
