Free Agent Roulette: Marry, Screw, or Bury

So you're Marty Hurney and it's time to decide which players Carolina signs to long term contracts (marry), offer a short term or low money deal, but allow to walk if they balk (screw), or outright releases (bury). This isn't about what you think is going to happen, but what you think the Front Office should do. I've included the free agents listed here plus a few vets at the tail end of contracts. What I would do is in Bold.

James Anderson OLB RFA Screw

Tyler Brayton DE UFA Screw

Thomas Davis OLB RFA Marry

A.J. Feeley QB UFA Screw

Jeff King TE RFA Bury

Louis Leonard DT RFA Bury

Rhys Lloyd K RFA Screw

Richard Marshall CB RFA Marry

Josh McCown QB UFA Bury

Matt Moore QB RFA Marry

Muhsin Muhammad WR UFA Bury

Julius Peppers DE UFA Screw

Quinton Teal S RFA Bury

Hollis Thomas DT UFA Screw

Tank Tyler DT RFA Bury

Keydrick Vincent OG UFA Bury

Dante Wesley CB UFA Screw

C.J. Wilson CB RFA Bury

Most of the RFAs will be at the least tendered offers, make no sense to just let them walk. Tyler and Leonard will be back as we gave up picks to get them, so expect at the least a tender.

The grey area for me are Marshall, Davis and Moore. I can see the temptation to tender them high and then negotiate through next season. that way you get compensation if they are snapped up and not matched, but more importantly get a better handle on the lock out for 2011. No point in loading up on big deals for starting that year if there is no football.

Thus I can see Moore, Marshall and Davis all being tendered high first and THEN attempting to negotiate a 'fair' deal for us.

At least that is what the front office 'should' be thinking.

    • Actually we like to run more than most, and the dropoff isn't that drastic. We seem to be pretty much middle of the road. The Facons, Bucs, Browns and Bengals are the ones where running drops off markedly when they start trailing. Our line on the chart, like I said, is somewhat middle of the road.  As to whether or not if it's good or bad is anyone's guess by looking at this. I suspect people who like Old school football won't be upset at this at all. The thing is, we would have to know the game scripts and the situations, as running and or passing making sense is contextual. I know that I haven't necessarily been enamored with Canales's situational play calling. At the end of the day, I believe in using the run to set up the pass and the pass to set up the run, and trying to keep the opposition off balance, but I still believe that you should run it down their throats if they can't stop it.
    • Hey alright baseball is awesome.  I cheer for the Braves but I watch all 30 teams.  I pay for MLB TV and both local teams because I'm insane.🙃
    • Because he's from Charlotte, grew up a Panthers fan, and could still make amazing money as an elite LG for his hometown team. And while I think he's a quality starting LT, he's not a Top 5 type of player either.  If he could prove to be a true elite LG, the money might not be that different than what he could make as a LT anyways. I'm not saying he will, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities.
