this QB class is not looking that good..

Mallett announced his intention to return at a 1:30 p.m. press in the Raymond Miller Room of the Broyles Athletic Center. The strong-armed Texarkana native had explored the possibility of entering the NFL Draft. He broke or tied 16 school records in his first season as a starter, passing for 3,627 yards and 30 touchdowns

He definitely needs another year. He has all the physical tools, but needs to learn to take what the defense is giving him instead of going downfield all the time.

Yeah, but he could have slipped to us easier this year if we were interested. I had rather him spend a year here in the system behind NFL Pro QB's, instead of in college. His stock will only go up next year.

Have we traded our 1st round pick for next year? I know we traded atleast one pick for next year, but don't remember where it falls.

i am not sure we had a shot at him anyway. i think he was a mid 1st rounder and at the worst, a very early 2nd rounder. his size and arm strength are great, he had enough mobility when they rolled the pocket, and could make all the nfl throws. imo he was this years sanchez. he is a great prospect with very limited playing time. i dont think he would have started in 2010 for an nfl team (or at least he shouldnt have) but project that could turn into a top 3 qb.

This is why I said, and feel the way I feel, along with watching the guy included.

With just one full season as a starter (he filled in for an injured Chad Henne at Michigan midway through the season), Mallett could be wise to return to Arkansas for his junior year. If he does, a first-round selection in 2011 is possible. If he comes out for 2010, count on him getting taken in the second or third round of the draft
.

But....lately I have seen him being slated as high as #7 overall pick, to Washington. Who knows. I just know he would have been worth the risk if he slid to us this year, but that dream is over.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
