“The largest year-over-year growth among any of the league's 32 teams, the franchise is now worth an estimated $980 million.

Why is that number important?

When Tom Dundon became the majority owner in January 2018, Forbes' latest ranking had Carolina valued at $230 million - dead last in the NHL.”

You would think ‘ol stock manager Tepper would understand the basics. Dundon has taken a 230 million franchise and nearly turned it into a billion.

Dundon is awesome...

But taking a shot at Tepper is silly the Panthers are valued at 4.1 billion almost twice what he paid.

What does Dundon have that Tepper doesn’t? Oh, the most important thing from a fans perspective. A winning team.

Well that and he let's the guys who know what they are doing call the shots....

I just meant from a money perspective even with the piss poor on field product he has doubled his money 💰  I promise you he could care less what people think he's an investor and it's been a good investment...

Eh fair. But also I think 4.1(4.4) is a gross over valuation. That’s basically just the right to own a football team at this point.

He’s taken this team from its top end heyday down to 26th overall in NFL valuation…

That’s not a good ROI in context.

Completely agree I just mean from a $ standpoint there isn't much he can do to not walk away with him claiming to be a savvy investor if he sells the team.... I don't think it's low tbh franchise's sell over evaluation these days....  I don't forsee the Panthers getting any better anytime soon.... like most reasonable fans I'm apathetic to anything they do.

I think the moral is ya he may have basically doubled his money. But Jerry Jones, who team is normally crap, added basically the panthers entire net worth, from 5 to 9 billion over the same span. So even from the money perspective…. His ROI is way way low.

Eehhh bad comparison as the cowboys are the Rangers/Leafs of the NFL huge Homer market....

The KC Cheifs are only worth 4.3B outside of NY/Dallas most other teams don't have access to that big of a market share.

My point is if your waiting for Tepper to go lose money or go broke owning the panthers it ain't gonna happen

I’m not expecting either. I’m just saying Dundon is clearly > Tepper. Tepper has the worst football team in the span, literally 24-58 or what ever?! Canes have been knocking on the Stanley cup case since dundon took over.

Comparing the NHL and the NFL with respect to franchise valuation is apples and oranges. The business models are completely different in almost every facet.

The financial operation of the NFL contains so much "projected" and "future" money and, with the exception of the Green Bay Packers, are privately owned entities. Therefore, no one really knows how much money owners are making. Look no further than the salary cap structure for both leagues. At least the NHL has a hard cap and it doesn't take a PhD to figure it out. Meanwhile, the NFL salary cap is so completely convoluted that everyone has a paid capologist. It allows for teams to say they'll pay someone x-dollars over the next 5 years, defer some of it, guarantee some of it, etc.

The NFL is a business model that operates as a monopoly, not so much the NHL. The most floundering, worst team in the NFL will continue to appreciate and make money regardless of their situation. See what happened with NHL franchises who faced on-ice and financial challenges? North Stars, Whalers, Thrashers... The NHL business model requires a level of on-ice success to remain a viable franchise.

But, as was mentioned several times throughout the thread, the bottom line is this- the Canes are a successful franchise and the biggest factor in the financial success is they win.

NFL owners egos are the only motivating factor for winning. They will make money regardless how bad the on-field product is.

Just wait until they develop the whole area around PNC, should see another huge jump in valuation. Dundon knows he just needs to have continued success  or at least not be fuging atrocious

400 million in… ya it’s going to add a B to the entire thing.

You would think Tepper could take a look toward Raleigh and Dundon and see that if you allow people who know what they are doing to do the job you hired them to do you will profit.

NFL franchises will always be worth more than hockey franchises, but what Dundon has done with the Canes is outstanding.  He's put his money where his mouth is and it has paid off in spades.  I remember when he first bought the team people called him "cheap" and that the Canes were a "poverty franchise," haven't heard that in 4-5 years.   I do hear that about the Panthers now!  Old Brass Balls needs to put up or shut up.

Tepper doesn't need to do anything if all he wants to do is make money. The NFL TV contracts, revenue sharing and creative financing (no hard cap), make any NFL franchise a study in voodoo economics. Do nothing, have a bad product and still make money hand over fist.

Can't survive in the NHL doing the same thing.
